While scrubbing the glass of algae in my 20 gallon high, I noticed my pair of GBRs coloring up and attacking the scrubbie and my hand. They were not scared of it and I would not let them bite me which is what I think they'd absolutely do! I know they're just fish, but I don't want to get bit by these monsters lol. How should I go about scrubbing the rest of the tank? Should I let them bite me? Should i net them temporarily? Are they protecting eggs? I haven't seen anything yet. Thanks for your help.

Try having L. boulengeri attempting to literally kill your hand during cleanings around their shells lol. They could be protecting eggs if it's a specific part of the tank. What else is in the tank with them? I wouldn't worry about it...as I've said, my African cichlids used to attack me all the time to no personal distress. Net them if you feel like it, or put them in a bucket while you clean the tank :)

I have never kept rams, but that sure sounds like little cichlids protecting a spawn to me!
For what its worth, I had angels that would attack me when they were spawning, and the bites are definitely startling, but don't really hurt.

Neh, it might be spawn, or might just be hungry! When I go to clean my tank, my angelfish and rosy barbs like to try to eat my freckles. It's really good for exfoliating, but they can get a little aggressive. Then its less fun, but I can usually put up with it:)

my female GBR used to peck at my hand while I cleaned the tank. it was adorable. It never hurt. She did not have a mate, so she was not protecting eggs, it seemed more like a curiosity thing than an attack.

My albino mbuna used to bite me, but it doesn't really matter. But I my crayfish bit me... We would be eating like Cajuns that night...

A little OP, but when I get my lionfish, I hope that doesn't bite me!!! Or sting me...

If its not too aggressive they might just be hungry. If I put my hand into my community tank before I feed I usually get swarmed by cherry barbs and ghost shrimp. Doesn't hurt but they always nip when I'm not expecting it so I jump out of my skin.

Hi
I've found most fish will attack you. I always suspected the reason was that hair looks a lot like worms . Or perhaps
particles of salt dead skin?? I find rams very aggresive once they become familiar with the routine . have a Betta that will flare every time I approach his tank and does not hesitate to bite.. Unless you have piranha I seriously doubt it's ever fatal or even painful.Irritating ?? Yes!!! gary
