Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd share but I bought two German Blue Rams on Saturday (which I hoped were a male and female) and they spawned around Monday night or early this morning...

I always heard that Rams were easy to breed but I never thought it was this easy!

They are only a little over one inch. Seeing as thsis is their first spawn, I'm not sure the eggs will make it but I hope they do!!!

By the way, anyone have any tips that they would liek to share. Or any don't with Ram spawns?

Thanks!

Thanks for the previous answer Cathy.

I have read Emg's threads so many times, but i re-read and noticed somethings I missed before. Well, sadly the first batch eggs were eaten that night, but today they have spawned again. This spawn is about three times bigger than the first. I left on a dull light the first spawn, but it burnt out sometime during the night. This time I'm going to try a brighter light.

Hope this spawn makes it through the night.

Wow, its only been a week since the last spawn. These little buggers don't waste time. :dance2:

Edit: If anyone reads this by tonight, I was thinking of removing the alagae eater. I have a hunch it was him who ate the eggs. its a chinese alagae eater (known to be aggresive) but I dont want to disturb the parents too much. Should I leave him in or chance it and try to catch him?

Thanks again....

Hey Pufferpeep,
The light never did anything to help my fish not munch. Yep, the algae eater will have to go, but they should be guarding those eggs and standing their ground.
It is very easy to get these fish to spawn, the hard part is hatching and rearing the tiny fry. Let us know what happens and maybe next time you can be prepared. (Remove trouble fish well before the eggs are layed...)

Thanks for the quick reply Cathy. i was going to take out the algae eater because I saw that my rams had been cleaning thier leaf. But I left to go to my brothers play not expecting them to spawn so soon. Btu I was wrong..

Ill definatly be prepared next time

Thanks again for the quick reply

Pufferpeep!

well..

So far so good. I think that the liight helped the parents guard the eggs because the eggs were still there in the morning. So far I can only see one fungused egg.

We will see how things go from here :)

And the eggs were eaten. I glanced in the tank and over half of them had fungused at some point. The parents were eating them, and I let them be.

Well at least this batch lasted a few more days then the first.

Hi Puffer,
If you are serious about ram fry, I think you will have to pull the eggs. At least to find out if the parents are fertile. Oh, I should say first that the eggs wouldn't necessarily get properly fertilized if your water is harder than 4-6 or so gh, and 3-4 kh. (Harder water makes the shell to strong for proper osmosis and fertilization.)

Hatching them is not hard to do, the hard part is in rearing the fry. It is a ton of work... if you want to pull them next time to see if they even ripen, just wait for a few hours to pass since they were layed, and pick up the rock they were layed on and put it in same temperature RO water. I used about 4-5 inches of water in a 10g. Add an airstone/bubbler to keep the water circulating over the eggs, and then add hydrogen peroxide - I can figure out how much if you want me to - and cover with a dark towel to keep some of the light out.

If the temps are at 83-4 or so, they should hatch within 24-36 hours. These are wrigglers, they don't eat, don't swim. After 2-3 days of these, they become free swimming and then the work starts! Add a well seasoned sponge filter and newly hatched bbs AND microworms...

I don't know if you are interested in all this or not, but if so let me know.

Cathy
My new set of rams spawned last night. So far the eggs are there, and I haven't decided if I will pull them or not. I am thinking not - I have lots of bolivian ram fry I am dealing with now...

Cathy,

Thanks for the information. Right now I am just enjoying watching the parents. One day, maybe over the sumemr, i will pull them just for the experience, I might pull the eggs. (Right at the moment I dont have a spare tank anyway :p: )

Thanks for replying to my posts :)

and good luck with your eggs!
