German Blue Rams

I've noticed the same...My interpretation is that German Blue Rams farmed in Germany are hardier than German Blue Rams farmed in Thailand - "German" being part of the fish's name and having nothing to do with it's origin, like buying a Persian carpet made in a factory in Canada...

I have never bought fish from the good doctors. I do find their descriptions too 'positive'. I used them as a resource early on and introduced a bumblebee snail as a "good scavenger". It ate all my sessiles, only comes out at night, and does no good with detritus... They do have good deals, though!

For me, I have a couple of very good LFSs close, so I get my fish locally. Good luck to you!

If you notice in that link, on the right side under origin, it says they are farm raised in Thailand. German is part of there name, when shopping for them, ask the fs where they were BREED, and make sure that they know what they are talking about and aren't just refering the the name. Any stock that was breed in europe or the states, or are wild caught will actually live.

German Blue Rams from Florida

There is a gentleman in Florida that sells German Blue Rams.
He can be found on Ebay and also at Aquabid.com
Do a search for: "Florida Guppies Plus"

Good luck :dive:

Local breeders are the best place to try to find some good ones. Perhaps there is an aquarium society around your city? All are absolutely right about avoiding any asian/taiwan bred rams - they may slap the name "German rams' on their stock.
I have a lfs that imports rams directly from German breeders. HOWEVER these shipments are very few and far between.
Good Luck,
Cathy

Thanks for all of the replies. Does anyone know where the "German" part of the name comes from? Are "German" Blue rams an improved line over wild Microgeophagus ramirezi? I'm just being curious at this point.

Aquarists in Germany bred a stronger resiliant strain of the blue rams. They have better colors and more disease resistant. Thus they were dubbed German Blue rams. Unfortunately, that name is now applied to any blue ram, even those bred in Asia...

P.S. Some LFS's are very careful to only label German Blue rams fish that they know are from Germany. Others just buy fish with that name and sell them with that name despite where they come from.

I don't agree with that. Germany to my knowledge is where the fish were first exported too and successfully bred, thus coining the common name, German Blue Ram.

Wild Rams have as splendid color as any captive bred line. Any LFS will name their fish German Blue Rams or simply Blue Rams despite their origin, because thats simply what they are. This is also why Common names are completely assinine, scientific names are the only true universal name for a species.
