German Sheppard pup

On a note about training.

Train the dog to stay in YOUR YARD!!!!

I can't stand people who have dogs that will run off if they happen to get outside without a leash. And people who live in the country and think it is okay to let their dog run all over the place. Certain exceptions can be made, like if another dog was walking by and yours went to investigate. But, nevertheless it is not hard to train your dog to stay within the respectable boundaries of your yard. Otherwise you may meet a person like me who isn't so kind to stray dogs.

I'll second that! That's part of why I asked if there was a dog run available. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, on a horse ranch. Our dogs knew not to chase the horses, and they stayed with us when they were out. Any dog found on the property was shot with a paint ball--the first time. If it was chasing livestock, it was shot with a .45.

Even now, living in town, my dogs stay close to me when they are out front, even if they aren't on leashes.

Yep, I live on a farm to. I give every "stray" dog one strike, I chase them off and leave it at that. If they come back then, well, they won't be bothering anyone else. But, don't think I'm cold hearted; it breaks my heart having to kill a dog. And, if at our first meeting the dog comes up to me and shows that it is not aggressive, then I will gladly take it to the shelter. If the dog shows aggression to me or I find it harassing livestock...

[Begin story]I had to stop for a second to tell a quick story. Just as I was typing this very message, a strange dog walked into my yard. It went into the barn where my dog was. So, I stopped and went outside to investigate, and as soon as the door shut the dog rushed out of the barn and high tailed it heading east down the road. It had a collar and seemed to be in good condition. But, it wasn't a neighbor’s dog. It acted like it was lost and looking for someone. I think it is an example of someone dumping a dog. It didn't seem aggressive, and I would have let it stay the night and taken it to the pound in the morning. Seems though that it won't be coming back. [End story]

...and/or a wild animal then the only choice I have is to kill the dog. I don't like doing it, but it has to be done.

Dogs are pack animals and to exclude them outside by themselves is not good for them. Nothing wrong with the dog having outside time, in a safe area, like a run or a fenced in area. If you spend $$ on a dog you don't someone to come along and steal it, or have it get in a fight with another dog or animal and get hurt or killed.
The rules are different out in the country where you have more room and a large roomy outbuilding that is warm in cold weather. If you have more than one dog for company outside..that's better. Dogs aren't meant to be a single solitary animal outside.
I reccomend reading books on dog training by Jan Fennell. She has a different perspective on dog behaviors, and why dogs do what they do.

For a german shepard...I'd be sure to have the hips x-rayed and only buy from a reputable breeder that only breeds proven healthy stock. There are few things more heartbreaking than becoming attached to a dog and find out that it's hips are shot at a young age.

Research the dog food you plan to feed your dog. There is a wide variety in quality of food. You should never feed your dog cheap food. WHole Dog Journal published a list yearly of quality dog foods. Trendy brand names aren't necessarily the best. You need to look at the ingredients...and be sure the food is made out of human quality foods. You can do a web search for info.

Thanks for all the input guys,

They have a fairly large yard or garden as we call it over here, my dad has spent most of the day kitting out a six foot shed as his/her home, the house is not really that big and a german sheppard will soon fill it up although there is a space for the dog to sleep should it get really cold.

My little sis and mum are big softies the dog will never be short of attention i can gaurentee that, we have a german sheppard association in the uk with my regional club being in the same town as me, my mum and dad are off to see them today to find out a bit more and talk to breeders,

My gradfather has a white german sheppard beautifull animal and his pride and joy dispite having 20 grandchilren, that dog is huge!

Heehe...my kids think I love the dogs more than them. Maybe. They don't need college tuition $, they don't wreck cars..get traffic tickets. THey always greet you when you come home with a cheerful face and a big kiss.

You are in England...Jan Fennell country!! You ought to be able to find her books there, heck even her!
