Well this is my first post here... Ive been lurking for a while. Iam getting a 75g for Christmas. I have pretty much decided on cichlid's(small to medium size) My question is about filters, what is a good filter/combo of filters for a 75g with cichlids? I have been looking at a Emporer 400 with the possiblity of also running a canister? any advice is gladly accepted.

Hey, Santa is bringing me the same thing!

I'm not housing cichlids, but I'm going to use the Emperor 400 for biological and the Eheim 2026 Professionel II for mechanical. Huge "overkill" for rainbowfish, but I like a well-filtered tank.

They should work fine for cichlids, too.

Ive pretty much decided I will be getting a Emporer 400. Iam still trying to decided on a cannister. Do I need a high end cannister for mechanical or can i go with something like a Magnum 350? Iam still learning about cannisters, this is my first serious tank and I would like to start off right the first time.

Here's a fairly recent thread on filters:

Should help somewhat.

I'm no expert, but I've heard good things about the magnum 350, and I think it would be enough filter initself, you wouldn't need the other one unless you like a lot of filtration like roan here.
Lucky!!!! All I get is coal.
Well, I understand that cichlids are pretty messy, which is why I suggested the Eheim. Could be overkill, but I'm sure some cichlid people will give some good recommendations.

The XP2 and XP3 are much cheaper and everyone seems to like them second best, so that may be the better route.

The Magnum is great, I've just had a bad experience with it that kinda soured my whole outlook on it. I also find the gaskets are WAY too flimsy. It's brand new and I've only had it on this tank for about 2 weeks, but I've already had a gasket shred. Don't like that one bit.

Well Santa brought me a 75g with a very nice custom stand. My wife got me a Emperor 400 and I also purchased a Magnum 350. I have pretty much decided on a Hydor 300w inline heater. So pretty much the only thing Iam missing is substrate and decor (rocks) Iam hoping to get it together within the next week or two. I have one question about the Emperor 400, I have seen a few threads about modifing them with a airstone? Does anyone have experince with this or should I not waste my time.
