The pond with some Triops
I rescued my betta a year ago, he was just crammed into a little teenyweeny cup (as most are)... But the only extra tank I have was the puny 1 gallon with no filteration! So I was sad and decided to get a new minibow for my poor betta... So what should I get for the minibow? Heater and filter? (though it should come with the bow)

Which sized Minibow are you getting? The 2.5 or 5 gallon? They don't come with a heater, so you'll need to get that separately. A 25 watt heater would work for either size.

I have a 2.5 for one of my bettas (Blue!) and I love it. I did opt for a different filter though. I found the Whisper one that came with it was kind of bulky and I wanted to maximize the space - so I bought a Red Sea (I think?) Nano filter (HOB). It was under 10 bucks, and made the tank crystal clear. Love it.

I just bought a Hagen Waterhome 5 (5 gal bowfront). It comes with a nifty little top filter (which works like a trickle filter if you shove some biomax in the right place) and an awesome 13watt CF bulb.

I had a hard time finding a good heater for the small tank. I didn't want just a hob 25 watt heater so I finally found a 25 watt Elite Mini that was submersible and has been working well since ig ot it yesterday ...

If you want something easy to maintain. Efficient and VERY plant-friendly i'd recommend one.

How well does the filter work in the Waterhome 5 and how strong is the current? I was thinking of either getting one of those or a Waterhome Econo 5 set (basically comes with a 5 g glass tank and canopy with light, aquaclear filter, some plastic plants, net and some other little stuff).

How about some floating plants for your betta? I have some floating plants in my 2 gallon with my betta and he loves it. Sometimes he hangs out in the floating plants just for some chill time. If you can I would recommend some live plants since that will help the water quality in such a small tank. Water sprite is a good one and is usually commonly found at the LFS. It is also not light demanding and can handle most any water conditions. BTW this is where my betta chooses to sleep every night too.
