getting cichlids to eat snails

how do u get cichlids like large buttifokeri to eat snails.do u crack open the shell or what.My buttifoker goes crazy and bites the shell and pushes it across the tank

Just leave them in there, and give him time. He will figure it out if he's going to eat snails. I have no experience with your particular brand of cichlid, but most of the cichlids I've owned would smash the smallmer snails, and rip the bigger ones out of their shells.

I found out that angels can aquire a taste for escargo..and when they do..the population diminishies quickly

I bought some of those stupid freshwater clams a long time back now and I was told that they where way to tough for a cichlid to pull open. Needless to say my fish had a raw bar all day long lol. Just give him some time he will figure it out soon enough.

I pick the pond snails out of my community tank and drop them in my JD's tank; very rarely to they get more than 2 inches below the surface!

I find that crushing the snails and offering them that way to the fish teaches them to recognize it as food. Some of the larger snails can have really tough shells, though, especially in hard water (mmmm, calcium)!
