I'd say you need more light. Hairgrass can grow in 2wpg, but since this is a tall tank you aren't getting near enough light penetration to the gravel to grow hairgrass.

how tall is your tank?
i grew hairgrass with 18watts on 12inch cube (7gallon)

If it's a standard 20 hex, it'll be 20 inches tall. Looking at the pic in your signature, it's definitely a lighting issue. You'll want more watts and a better reflector to reach the bottom of the tank.

metal halide, small pendant will do, get a 70 watt one :)
you'll love the effect.

Yikes, that's pricey.... anyway to do similar with floresent....using my existing hood..... I've got an 2 year old who loves the fish.... this seems like it might be considered a child hazard not to mention expensive.

Or

Is there another carpet that would work with my existing setup? I thought hairgrass was supposed to be low to med lighting......

Thanks

Hairgrass is sometimes listed as low to medium light, when in reality it's a medium/high light plant. The reason your having issues is your tank depth. Standard flourescent won't penetrate well in a deep tank. The halide would do wonders like misopeenut said, but it's not an option for you. You could try to retro a power compact or T5 setup into your existing hood, but depending on your skills it may not be to child friendly. If you really want a lawn of something you could use some of the mosses available. It may take a while for them to take hold, but once they do they can look fantastic.

Bummer....

Well I do have some Java Moss goin on my wood. Not sure I would like it as a carpet... well see. Maybe I'll go for the short forest instead.... So cute to watch my cories wiggle around the grass.

Thanks all, for the help.

I've grown it at 1.6 w/gal with T12 lighting at 20" depth, no issues, sold lots of it.

I'd call it a low to high light plants, like most plants.
They have a very wide range.

Main thing is CO2 with hair grass, good stable CO2 will help a great deal.
I've grown it well in non CO2 systems but it takes a long time.
