Getting Info for a client

Just use a water conditioner. Make sure the new water is the same as the tank water. For a small tank, I just fill a pitcher and let it sit till it becomes room temp. If you want, you could check the tap water with test kits.

Frankly, he needs to increase the size of the tank to 5 Gallons and put a betta in it. There are no fish that will be happy in 1 Gallon.

Generally to treat water use a good conditioner, to take out chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals - Seachem Prime is great. You also have to cycle the tank to the point where the available bacteria can process the fish waste from ammonia, through nitrite to nitrate and then manage nitrate by water changes. In the event that the water contains ammonia from the tap Seachem Prime will take care of this.

But please tell him, no fish in a 1 Gallon 'tank'...there is no swimming room, no room for a heater, no room for a filter, parameters will be impossible to maintain...his son will just end up with dead fish.

Is the tank filtered? If so, you could add some of Media from your own tank, but to be honest the size would essentially require a 90-100% WC weekly regardless. Also, a heater will quickly eat up the erta space as well...

Personally, it may not be the best experience, but I would bring the bowl and fish back to the LFS and demand a Return towards an upgrade.

Yes there is a filter. Its small but at least they have one. Ill try to get him to return it. Here you can pick up a 10 gallon compleat from walmart for 25 bucks so I might tell him about that. I didnt even know they make 1 gallon tanks.

The 10 Gallon is a no-brainer - 25 bucks is surely nothing for your client, and he and his son will have much more fun with it.
