Getting Rams to Eat

Hey guys! I've had my male ram for about 1 week now.... Whenever I feed my fish he doesn't come to the top to eat, he normally waits till a few flakes drift down to where he is. He normally only eats a few flakes at each meal (my fish are fed twice a day, morning and evening). I'm not sure if he is getting enough food... Will he eventually start going to the top with the other fish to eat? Should I be worried? And any suggestions on how to make sure he is getting enough food would be helpful. He looks fine but I want to be sure.

Hi...

I had the same problem.....

I've found that rams don't always like flake food....get some small sinking wafers or pellets (small- they have little mouths) and include just a little of that in with the rest of the flake food at feeding time. Don't worry too much about him getting enough to eat....a little food is bound to wind up at the bottom and he can graze during the day.

Blood worms are another treat that I've found rams like.

Okay, thanks, I'll try that. I've read that German blue rams take a while to adjust to the communtiy and that they can sometimes be difficult to get eating.... He is still kind of shy but I can tell he is adjusting well to the tank, he's getting more bold every day.

Hmm, right now I have some shrimp pellets, should I drop one in? He tends to eat off the bottom, maybe he would enjoy that.

Anyone?

I feed mine a wide variety of foods - New Life Cichlid pellets - the 3mm size works the best. (They sink and are small.) They get that every morning, then in the afternoon they get a frozen food. I rotate between blood worms, mysis shrimp, spirolina enriched brine shrimp, and some frozen discus food by jack wardley... something like that. (The stuff is a mixture of many different foods including some beef heart and it is held together by gelatin).

THey do mostly feed at the bottom, but there are times when they'll come up to snatch some food from the top. (I also feed live white worms and grindal worms - you grow those yourself, after you buy a started culture...)

Okay. I'm not going to be able to get to my LFS for a while but I think the ram will enjoy my sinking shrimp pellets.... I'll get him some small cichlid food and bloodworms next time I have a chance. Thanks for your help!

I have bolivians in a large SA cichlid tank..hey don't compete as well as the angels, discus and keyholes..what i do is drop food in..when the fish start feeding ..i drop a bit more food in another section of the tank..that way more food can make it too the bottom..you can also put food in a turkey baster and get it closer to the rams.

btw,, rams seem to prefer sinking food..I use tetra color bits..and frozen(thawed) bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Maybe it is just my rams, but mine all come to the top to eat, and will in fact eat from my fingers. They compete well with the angels.

I guess it just depends on the fish. I'll get some sinking food next time I
m at my LFS.
