I completely agree. They get a bad rep because they get associated with the nasty, terrestrial garden snails. Unless the snails are covering the glass or decor to the point of being a visual nuisance, there is no reason to get rid of them.

Going back to the question, if your tank can support it you can get some loaches or other fish that will terminate them with extreme prejudice.
 
dude. if u don't want them, could u send me 2 or 3 little ones?
 
I've come to an uneasy alliance with mine...

The do an awesome job dealing to the algae.
I stopped overfeeding - they stopped super breeding

Still get annoyed with them and some of the places they get into, but having the tank in a high light area I wouldn't really be without them now. (even if I could get rid of the lil sods!!)

I have my 'grumpy' days where I swear I'm gonna kill 'em - closest I've come is tossing them in the coldwater tank.

Just out of curio - the ones I forgot bout after a water change lived just fine for 3 weeks in a bucket on the deck so I'm guessing cold water isn't a problem, but they DO vanish in the coldwater tank. Will a goldfish eat snails?

Honestly - I have 1 tank that was completely overrun with them, and 1 tank I can't get them to live in - AND I WANT THEM TO!! :wall:

Still it is a good reminder of what the tropical tank would look like and need maintenance-wise if I didn't have my snails!!
 
i think i need some snails bcuz my f'ing pleco wont eat the algae. id just have to keep their population under control

These "innocent creatures' are super good at getting themselves into 2x teeny holes in the back of the submersible filter (where the motor clicks in). I haven't had any direct problems with the impellor yet, I'm pretty digilant at fishing the lil dudes out, but I can't imagine them having a party in there is too good for it :confused:

A freaky ammonia spike when I was 5 days overdue with basic maintenance, when my son and I had major food poisoning, was caused by these 'harmless' lil dudes committing mass suicide in there.

Honestly - I know it's not their fault that that particular filter is the serial killer of the filter world, and I do my best to 'play nice' with them - but like I stated before, right now it is at best an 'uneasy alliance'.

Nothing personal against them - they just keep dying in the wrong places ;)


Oh yeah - that was a serious question about whether or not goldfish eat snails (pond and ramshorn I think!!), because they just are NOT surviving in the coldwater tank. Any recommendations on what snails I COULD put in there that would live? That tank has a 'nice' filter *cheesy grin*

My opinion is...like in a garden, anything you don't want there is a weed. Sorry, just my opinion.

Snails do not cause trouble, nor do they harm desired plants or fauna. And they do have value.

Therefore your statement is illogical.
