GH help required...PLEASE

Unless you live 100 miiles away from the LFS you probably have the exact same water as the LFS. They are already acclimated to that, so just hit the bypass and fill er up!

In my case the LFS is on city water which is treated by the city (ie. flouride). I have a well and my water is high in iron and magnesium and has a high acidity (blue pipes) so I first have a acidity neutralizer which actually ends up adding calcium to the water, then it goes through a water softener to remove the iron and then through a sediment filter.

Flouride wont do diddly to your fish. Perhaps premote a "winning smile", but wont hurt them at all..

I know all about hard water, I live in an area with high GH KH and pH and dont have any issues using it for breeding.

Think on a larger scale then a single well... "city" water is the same water that you tap into via a well, it has just been recycled or perhaps straight from an aquifer (as in my case) and treated. These aquifers are enormous so unless you are literally 100s of miles away it is most likely the same water composition if not source. Seriously bypass the softener and you will most likely be fine. I cant see any great difference being possible between you and the LFS

Now stop being a fretful fish daddy ;)

Could he take the water after the acid neutralizer? I'm not sure adding calcium would harm fish, and it would actualy increase hardness.

this may not be totally true. you are assuming that all fish will react to a chemical the same.
I expect like humans some fish may actually be less tolerarant of fluoride than others. I hear tell the salmon and salmonids tend to be effected by fluoride here in the PNW.

here some parts of the county use reservoirs for source water others use wells. the weird thing it all depends on the provider. ie tacoma city pulls from reservoirs rural areas from wells. the question is..where is the dividing line.
I use to live 10 miles from my new house..at the old house they used reservoirs..the new house wells.

You have made some good points... However you must take into consideration that the salmon are possibly receiving much higher dosages and in higher concentration. Aquarium fish are receiving regular high volume, purified changes that wild fish never see..

I think a greater risk lies in the ammount of female hormone (via birth control pills) that enters the water table. Dr. Suzuki did some research into this and lets just say I dont date anyone around the great lakes ;)

Truly though, unless your geology varies greatly within that area, you are getting water from the same table... Just out of curiostiy, have you ever tested these other sources against your own... It would be interesting to see if there is a difference.

OK, I'm back. I bypassed the softener/neutralizer/filter to get a sample of water and brought it in to be tested. Ph and alkilinity were perfect. Hardness was hard/very hard (150-200). The woman who tested it this time seemed to have a pretty good handle on all this stuff and thought the fish would thrive in this water composition.

Looks good to me.
