I am thinking about getting a Black Ghost Knife and putting it in my 75g. I have 3 silver dollars, 3 congo tetras, 3 clown loaches, pair of blue rams, and a rosy barb... would that be okay?
okay, I'll wait... However for future reference would those fish go together... my main concern is the Blue Rams but I think that they would be okay. Also I heard you can hand tame these fish... does anybody know how you would do that?
I don't know man I 've never seen a full grown ghost knife, but I'm thinking an 18 inch fish could eat a 3 inch fish easy. All depending on tank size I guess. A Larger tank, the more options you have.
I've read that they do better on their own but can be put with similar sized fish of a similar temperment. AC profiles says: Tankmates should not include any fin-nippers or large Cichlids.
what about an elephant nose? just exploring options and trying to get something not so common. And I heard that baby whales were near impossible to keep alive. Any suggestions?
I think a Black ghost would be fine in a 75 gal for a long time, even if you're getting a medium size now (6-8 inches). However, the tetra and the blue ram s may have problem with it unless you start out with less than 5-inch size ghost.
From my experience, they grow fast when less than 6 inches. After that the rate slows down. Once they reach about 10", they grow pretty slow, may be one or two inches a year, unless you feed them REALLY well. But with carnivore like the ghost, feeding a lot will cause more harm than good for its intestine in the long run. They do require very clean water and plenty of hiding place though.
They can get large up to 18", but I don't think that would be easily attained in captivity. Even at 18", its body mass is nothing like an oscar or red-tailed cat, but would be much more slender (and elegant). So even a 55 gal can house a ghost comfortably.
Please do not pass up this wonderful fish. They are one of my absolute favorite fresh water fish!
