Hi I have a 40gallon tank im going to use as a freshwater tank.

Would a 40gal tank be a suitable home for a Ghost Knifefish, i dont know much about them but im learning, unfortunately im saving my money for my 125gal SW tank so i cant get a new tank for this fish

It would be only this one fish in the tank in less you think having others might help it feel more at home (said they are sociable)

So if you have experience with this fish tell me what you know about them and if you think it would be comfortable and live a full life in my 40gallon tank?

Unfortunately, a 40g tank is simply not going to be large enough for a ghost knife. They frequently get to be 18" long, and would do best in a 150g+ tank. (prefferably, the bigger, the better) I have read several documents stating that they're rather anti-social towards their own species as they mature, but given that they have room to establish their own territories, they might get along. With a 40 gallon tank, I'd recommend you look into the smaller schooling fish, like maybe a school of 20 cardinals and perhaps 5-7 peppered cory cats. That's my 2 cents anyway.

wow 150gal i had no idea, they recomended 50gal tank at liveaquria thats why i thought a 40gal might work.

Ok well thank you for clearing that up for me gatotsu77, I will stick with the smaller fish. I do like the Ghost knife so i will keep looking into it and maybe someday i can get a bigger FW tank for one.

Thanks again gatotsu77

Ghost knives Require no less then 180 Gallons. 200 or more being preferred..

You are most welcome Lucas Kane. If you're still really into the idea of knife fish, you might want to look into the african brown knife. They have a much smaller maximum size of 8", so a 60ish gallon tank would be ok for them. (but as goes for all fish, bigger tank = better) And yes, I agree with Ghost_knife that 200+ would be prefferable... I was listing a 150 as bare minimum, and even in that situation, it would be a bit cramped still.

Thanks again gatotsu77 i will look into the african brown knife, seeing as i probably cant get a 200 gallon lol

But its confusing cuz everywhere i look it seems to say u need a tank size of just 25-50gallons for a ghost knife. I will keep looking into it and for now just assume u all are correct lol :D
