I am interested in buying a ghost lobster from liveaquaria.com. I have a few questions. 1. I'm starting a 46 gal. tank, and live aquaria recommends at least 50 for this species... can I get by with 46?2. Will the lobster eat my shrimp?3. would you acclimate a lobster as you would any other fish?thanks!

Liveaquaria says they can reach 12" but I can't fins any outside info on them about tank size, etc. But most lobsters/crayfish will eat about anything they can get ahold of, including smaller fish. I wouldn't trust 'em with shrimp.

You should ask them for the actual name of that species, they're using a common name and an incomplete scientific name. Without knowing the actual species (because "ghost lobster" is often used to describe a lot of crays) you can't be sure what the requirements are going to really be. I'm not sure if that site is any good or not, I've never dealt with them, but they're using some copy & pasted information... which is more reason to know the actual species and look up the necessary requirements. In general though, a cray that size should be fine in a 46 gal but if you're getting more than one... then you'll need a much bigger tank. And it will more than likely eat your shrimp, a lot of species of crays are really fond of shrimp.

i put 6 red cherries as an experiment (about 1 month ago) in with my 2 adult and 30 plus baby red claw crays and they are still doing well. not hiding or being chased YET!!!!there is ample hiding places for them in the plastic plants though.

If the photograph on liveaquaria is an accurate depiction of what they sell, it is a Cherax species. The claws look a bit like a yabbie (Cherax destructor ), but I'm not sure. I've never seen a white morph of a Cherax destructor.

Yes, but Cherax encompasses a lot of different species. Cherax is just the genus, you still need to know the species to properly provide for it. It would really cool if it was a morph of destructor (I love the white morph of those, more so than the blue), but the claws look too elongated and granulated (not to say that it isn't a destructor, I make it a policy not to ID things). But then it'd be really overpriced, you can get the white morphs on other sites for $30-40 (depending on the size you want).
