Ghost Shrimp and Fish

By definition, low pH means acidic and high pH means basic. Alkaline is used to mean basic/high pH, but this has nothing to do with alkalinity. Alkalinity refers to calcium hardness or KH, which is a rough measure of the level of dissolved calcium ions in the water. Soft water has a low KH, hard water has a high KH. Soft water is commonly acidic, while hard water is basic, but this is not always the case. I'm not sure what minimum level of KH shrimp need to molt, but if you have very soft water (0-2 KH), that's probably too low, but it's also just as likely one of your shrimp just died.

thanks for explaining this to me! so much to learn, it's not just about putting cute fish in a tank, and letting it run, is it??? I am saving this for future reference. :bowing:

Hey guys. I found the little shrimp. I think he had been molting. There were not any pieces of molted stuff, but the other shrimp may have eaten it I guess. My shrimp went crazy when I put an algae wafer in the tank. They completely covered the wafer. My neon tetras liked it too. There's this one huge shrimp that acts like it's king of the mountain. It stands on top of a cave and waves its arms at any passing fish/shrimp. It's so cute.

that's awesome! shrimps are so neat if they manage to survive :P
oh yeah, sometimes after molting the shrimp will eat its old shell moult. after all, everything used to make a new shell made the old shell.
