Ghost Shrimp

Your thread inspired me to add a few Ghost Shrimp to my 5 Gallon. The only occupant of the 5 Gal is a betta (The most passive betta ever. Rest assured the ghost shrimp will live out long lives! If a betta could ever be called a panzy..mine's your guy!) Though I don't see them often, occasionally one comes out to the front of the tank. I've never owned any aquatic animals asides from fish. They are purty interesting. Thanks =D

Logy, you will not regret your decision! I also started with fish only. Now I've got lots of plants, snails, and all kinds of shrimp. The inverts are really amusing, much more than people probably give them credit for. I've found ghosties in particular are really funny. Two of mine (father and daughter) learned to turn themselves upside down at the surface to catch flakes. They didn't even learn this from each other, because the dad died soon after my 2 babies survived.

Actually, it was amazing. The mom and dad lived for years (even though I"ve heard ghost shrimp "only live for a few months", psshawww!). They had tons of babies, but as I said, only two survived. The two survivors were from the same clutch. Almost as soon as they metamorphosed into the shrimplet stage, Mum died. It's like she knew her job was done because she finally succeeded in replacing her. Soon after Mum passed, the dad also died. I kinda think it was due to a broken heart :(

Are you sure i bought my mom some ghost shrimp to put in her tank and my moms betta ate the ghost shrimp and was peckong at it....do you think i can put some in my 55 gal but some of my fish might eat them?

logy, ghost shrimp rock, i noticed with mine that as they get older, they get easier to find. Seems they pick up a little color and maybe even a touch of alge grows on them. I also have one that has a tiny red dot on each of it tail fins. Also, they are great little scavengers, they eat any flakes that make it to the gravel, and if you feed the red color flakes, you can even see it in the shrimps stomach

What usually happens with bettas and ghost shrimp is that the betta, being a carnivore, will eat the eggs right off the female's body. Then, when they go to shed their shell/skin/whatever, he'll eat them as well. Doesn't really matter how peaceful he is. So if you want your ghost shrimp to live long happy lives, you need to have sufficient places for them to hide from the betta during their vulnerable periods.

depends on betta personality also. some bettas will jump at the chance for a good live meal when others don't seemed bothered at all with tank mates.

The Betta tank is the only place where I haven't had Ghost Shrimp die. My Danios killed a few, my Pleco ate a couple apparently, but the Betta never bothers the one living in his tank.

I like shrimp quite a bit, just not many stores carry anything other than Ghost Shrimp although there's this new big store in my area but I haven't visited it yet as it's out of my way. I was thinking of setting up the planted tank in my basement as an all shrimp tank since it's been occupied by only plants since the Pleco died.
