So, if you are reading this, you probably know the story of my platnum bettas from Thailand (they arrived DOA). Feeling miserable, I went to the Petco in Denhim Springs (IMO, best bettas around) to see what they had. They had some very nice looking "King" Bettas...much nicer then any I had seen at the other stores. So I picked one out and went to the register...it was a whooping $30  . Needless to say, I put it back. I went to another petco in New Orleans and picked up a nice pair of crowntails that I will breed (technically, my dad picked them up and gave them to me). So as a fish junkie, those king bettas were still in my head for a week...and you knew it was going to happen...I went back and got one. He is about 3 inches long, has a plakat halfmoon tail, and is literally about 3x the size of a normal betta. In the pictures below, you can see both it and the crowntail. And yes, I plan to breed it, but the problem is, my only source for females is Thailand :(. As usual, my pictures do not give my fish justice.

He's pretty, and big, but are you sure he's actually a half moon?

I dunno if his tail is all the way extended in the first pic, but it doesn't look half moon.

Either way, take some closeup pics :)

He is definitely a half-moon, 180 degree tail. At most petcos, they only have the regular ones for like $12... there is a huge difference.

Justice cannot be given... It must be earned!

Great looking bettas!

That's awesome, I will be getting a king soon enough...I've put it off and put it off but I just can't do it no more lol. He's very handsome!

Really nice pleco there!
if ya do manage to breed it and get offspring of similar size you'll have to ship me 1 : P

The ones I see at petco labelled halfmoon never are unfortunately. And they still mark them up ridiculously high.

He must look pretty awesome with his fins extended.

The 180 degree tail isnt the be-all-an endall for defining a HM, you need to also have the caudial fin forking. (know what i mean? Im still learning the indepths about it all in all honesty, just trying to pass along what im picking up).

Not sure about that part. Here is what I can tell you...I have seen the king bettas at Petco for awhile now...in general, they weren't that great looking...and they went for about $12 I think. I went to 1 petco that I knew had great bettas in the past. It was there that I saw them. I thought that these were the best normal Kings that I had seen. Once I brought it to the register, it was $30, and I said no way. I then immediatly went to another petco to look at their Kings. The kings at this petco, were the standard kings...and looked poor (in terms of finnage). There was a huge and obvious difference.

Today I contacted the wholesaler that supplies the bettas to Petco. He said he thought he had some female kings in stock, but wasn't sure. Anyhow, I am going to provide the wholesaler information to the LFS that I deal with and see the order list...I might be able to get them to order me some femal kings...or should I say queens?

Especially with plakats. A plakat with a 180degree at the base of the caudal doesn't = HM. Since they have shorter fins it's not that hard to attain a 180 degree line since their fin rays will support being completely extended in that matter.

It should make a complete half circle shape.
