Giant Half-Moon Plakat

Caudal: In all three PK types the spread of the caudal ideally should be 180 degrees but the differences lie in the shape and branching of the rays. The caudal of (asymmetrical) traditional PKs is allowed to be rounded or spade-shaped. In my personal opinion the ideal (asymmetrical) traditional PK should have a primary (2-ray) branching. According to the IBC standard both a primary as a secondary (4-ray) branching are allowed. The spread in the caudal is not caused by an increase of branching but by an increase of webbing between the rays. The caudal of both asymmetrical show PKs and symmetrical PKs have straight rays, sharp edges and the shape of a semi-circle (capital "D"). The rays in the caudal often have a secondary branching (4-ray) or more (but should not be excessive). A >180 degree spread (overhalfmoon, oHM) is not preferred above a 180 degree spread. Here, the caudal should be no longer than 1/3 of the body.

What that means is ideally any quality plakat should have a 180 degree spread.

But in the traditional (non half moon) the edges of the tail are allowed to be shaped in something other than a complete half circle.

Hopefully that makes sense.

The only reason I mention any of this is $30 seems high for a fish that doesn't actually present as labelled.
If you like the fish, that's great, pay whatever amount you're willing to get it. But if you are specifically looking for a half moon, I wouldn't pay that for one that's not.

I took a few more pictures:

I think the 30$ price tag is based more on the giant factor than the finnage factor.

I'm not even seeing a full 180 degree spread. The fin rays are pointing backward.

Should look like this:

Still a nice fish.

Probably. I just wouldn't pay that when I was looking for an actual half moon. You can get actual giant halfmoon plakats online for that (shipping included).

But petco is always overpriced on bettas.

Regardless of what this fish is or isn't, he's BEAUTIFUL! I saw some kings at my petco recently and although they were $20 they looked nothing like your guy right here, and the fins were totally different. I'd pay $30 for such a beauty :)

I will freely admit, he might not be 180 degress, but he is at least 170 degrees....very different from the normal kings.

I agree. He's still stunning.

Ok, I'll bite, prove it.
If you search aquabid they're on there periodically for a decent price.

I'm not seeing any under $25 (not including shipping) right now though.

Note: When I say with shipping I'm talking about priority. Overnight is more expensive. With bettas I'm not that worried about shipping priority as long as the weather is ok.

If you're not comfortable shipping priority (and it does often void the DOA guarantee from the vendor), then my comment doesn't apply because that's going to add on like $25+.

There's nothing wrong with him and he does have a large tail spread. Just not quite HM.

I'm not trying to ridicule you or anything for buying him. If I see a fish I like at the fish store and I really want it I buy it regardless of whether it's "perfect".

It just annoys me that petco mislabels their fish like that so people end up buying a fish they think is something else. So yeah, my major issue is with them (or whoever is selling them to petco labelled as such).

On aquabid, you can find a giant half-moon for $25. Then you have to add $5 for the tranship, and $15 or so for priority mail...so its around $50. I just lost 2 platnium crowntails from Thailand using priority (normally, priority is fine, but right now, it is just too hot down here).

I actually found one that looks nearly identical to mine:
