Given old,dirty tank & supplies, HELP

you can test the rock by putting a couple of drops of vinegar on the rock--if it bubbles, put it back; if not, then it's cool

but if its in bags, where LFS? Home Depot? If its at a LFS is should say something like it has a buffering capasacity (sp?) then I think these rocks will raise your ph. Also if yoo can get the type of rock of of the bag then ask here about the type, people should be able to tell you if you can use it.
 
What is LFS? I actually was looking at Petco. Is that bad? My daughter wanted to get some from Wal-Mart but my husband thought that was not a good idea. Where should I go?

neither petco nor walmart is a good idea in my opinion, they just dont care about their fish. LFS is your local fish store, they're generally a lot better than your big chains like petco or petsmart. Check out your general area for little fish stores and post any questions you have here; most lfs are a hit or miss situation but beat out most petcos.
 
Hey All, I got my tank up and running. all good so far. Went and got 5 'serpae tetras' (sp?) They are doing great. Will give them a while then try some new ones. Any suggestions of what to try next?

Serpae tetras are rather agressive so im gonna suggest that you get a fish that can hold its own. Maybe a few (6-8) tiger barbs, some cory catfish, and a few shrimp or snails
 
It's so hard because my daughters want certain kinds of fish but I don't know what will get along with others or not. Thanks for the suggestions. I will need those when I go in with my kids. I guess the angel fish that I want is out of the question huh?

Angels get large, and agressive, not exactly a community fish (not in a 35 at any rate), sorry


List some of the fish that your daughters want and we'll tell you if they're compatible.
 
speaking of given old tank/supplies, my g/f's dad just unloaded his 29 gal on me...already cycled and everything, he just got tired of it he said. the only reason i'm not more excited is because it has goldfish in it :P
 
Edward.....see if your local fish store will take them off your hands



OKC......after the sherpae tertas....should wait a while (month) to let the tank cycle......if you add alot ..they will certainly die.
