I noticed after one of my tank cleanings that there was a small scratch in my glass tank (front about 6 inches from bottom). The scratch is small enough that if you are not looking for it, you probably won't see it (but I know its there... ). Are scratches in tanks, for the most part, inevitable and part of the "owning a glass tank experience"? I've been obsessing about the scratch and not sure I am over reacting.

Yes, they are inevitable. Moving rocks and gravel around and having children nearby increase the likely-hood of getting them (more!) but unless you only add plastic, fish and water, and live by yourself, you will get scratches. That's why they make tanks every day ;)

Scratches can be avoided. Just make sure you use caution when moving things around. However, you are likely to scratch your tank glass over time. it's normal. As long as the glass is not hit really bad, a scratch will be a minor problem.

Glass aquariums get scratches less than acrilyc ones, too.

Thanks. I think the scratch resulted from a piece of sand getting trapped between the magnetic algae remover and the glass

its almost impossible to avoid scratching a tank, but if it really bothers you there are some scratch removal products out on the market. ive never personally tried any of them but i have heard some success stories.

Glass is generally very hard to scratch anyway. I have two on my tank but it came with them. As long as you aren't hitting the tank with tools, hardware, or other hard objects, you most likely won't have to worry about getting more scratches.

I think scratch removers are for acrylic tanks only. Not sure. Maybe I'm wrong.

An advice: don't let algae grow in your tank. It it gets into a scratch (if deep enoguh) not even SuperPleco can remove it.
