Glass top and wooden top are in the garage. Like Grins, I want to help with the heat and ph and because I get a goog level of disturbence on the surface I'd only end up with salt creep all over them.

Now I know some people are probably going to freak out a bit.. but here is what the top of my tank looks like. No glass top. I tried many different variations to see what gave me the best light and this was it. 3 different timers for a really nice dusk/dawn setting.

Top fixture, 2-10K + 1-420 Super Actinic + 1-460 Actinic.
Angle Fixture, 1-12k UV Actinic White + 1-10k UV Aquasun

Ace, you are a pioneer. There is no "right" way of doing EVERYTHING.

lol yikes....so you have to take one fixture off to do tank maintenance etc?

LOL, no, it is just me and a roommate in the house. Couple cats that don't pay any attention to the tank. The light that looks like it could be trouble actually it more stable than the other big light. I glued the metal legs that slide out in place so it can't fall in the tank, plus the big light doesn't allow for the small one to even fit under it to be able to fall. The power cord is about as tight as can be as well so it can't fall forward. You would pretty much have to pull the power cord out of the socket, lift the light up, and throw it in the tank sideways if it were to somehow end up in the tank. It just looks more dangerous than it actually is. I just lift the little light and set it on top of the big light when I have to get into the tank. Makes it really easy.

For water changes, I just stick a tube in the side under the big light, syphon out 5G, and pour 5G back into my overflow box each day. No touching of the lights required. Takes just a minute or two to do a 5G change. Only time the light moves is when I scrape the glass or have to pick up corals that were knocked over during the night by my turbo snail... it has become a daily thing lately and really getting on my nerves.. to the point I really dislike turbos now.
