Hi there, I just set up a 10 gal tank for my boyfriend as a gift and we're slowly but surely getting the hang of all of it. I do, however, have a question. When we were getting our fish, I specifically asked the (seemingly knowledgeable) employee that was helping us for fish that would be good singularly in a community tank, not a school. I didn't want to overcrowd the tank or risk reproduction. He recommended an angelfish, a pearl gourami, and a painted glass fish. Now, I don't need to be reminded how awful the dying of fish is. I learned that after I had already bought him (foolishly believing it was natural coloring) and I have complained and boycotted that particular pet store. But now I have learned that both the gourami and the glass fish need to be in schools! My question is this; can they be happy without a school? I want my fish to thrive and do well, but I can't put a school of each fish in a 10 gal tank!

Gouramis generally shouldn't be in groups unless it is a sparkling, honey, or pearl gourami. Do you know what species it is?
Glass fish on the other hand need schools, and unfortunately your 10 gallon isn't big enough for even that one school. It will survive, but it would be better off with a group.

are you willing to upgrade to a 29 gallon tank? that way you will have a tank big enough for the angel and the pearl gourami. the glass fish should probably go back to the store; along with being a dyed fish, glassfish are known carriers of the virus lymphocystis, which can decimate your tank's stock.

I guess I'm going to have to look into upgrading, even though I've only had this stupid 10 gal for less than a month. I think this fish tank was a bad idea since there seem to be no decent pet/fish stores near me.

Fantastic. It would appear that my glassfish does, in fact, have lymphocystis. I've been trying to see what to do about it but information has been vague. Most say that it will clear up on it's own and it's not fatal but I'm still not sure what to do. They say move the fish to another tank, and I have a 5 gal but it's not set up at all.
What was the store's name that you bought it from? If you don't want to post it, PM me please.
If you take a back the fish, there are some good fish for 10 gallon.
Neon Tetra's- They like to school so if there are 5+ they'd be fine
If you don't like schooling fish you could always go with a Betta
or

No it's ok. I got it from Pet Goods. I know chains probably aren't the best but I don't have any good local pet stores and the tanks were clean and the people seemed knowledgeable.
And I already have one pearl gourami. I'm afraid to cause competition or breeding by bringing just one in instead of a few.
