i have scored a little tank (today) about 6 gallon im going to put glass shrimp into it do i need any specific temperature in there or will room temperature do which is about 22 degrees Celsius do? and is gravel ok for the bottom?

i am also getting some Brine Shrimp eggs will they be ok together?
 
Room temp and gravel are both fine. But brine shrimp eggs will not hatch in freshwater- they require extremely salty water to carry out their life cycle. There should be directions on the brine shrimp egg package.

If you want other small crustaceans to keep with your glass shrimp, isopods, scuds, daphnia, cyclops, and ostracods will all work. You should be able to find at least some of these in local pools and streams; the last three at least are common in temporary waters.

I'm assuming your glass shrimp are the Palaemonetes species, which remain small. Sometimes Macrobrachium species are also sold as glass shrimp; these guys get too big for a 6 gallon.
 
The little guys I mentioned will definitely breed. Glass shrimp seem to be hit or miss; if you keep plenty of plants and other cover in the tank, they should breed. I hear cherry shrimp are more reliable breeders; I haven't kept them myself, but some members here breed them regularly.
 
my only problem is being in Australia i am very limited to what i can get so whenever and shrimp come here i jump on them as they are very cheap $10 for 20 so 50cents each so i though well ill get them and see how i go :)

hopefully they bread quite well and will make something different for the cichlids to eat :)
 
A sponge filter or just an airstone is best in a tank like this; microcrustaceans and juvenile shrimp are easily sucked into the intakes of power filters. Keep up with water changes and you should be golden.

hahahaha lucky i kept an old filter :) was going to throw it out lucky i didn't someone gave it to me ages ago was out of a 5 gallon tank so should do the job perfectly :)
 
Sorry to jump in your thread. I was looking for posts on ghost shrimp and saw this. Does anyone know if they escape easy? I have a glass top on my tank, but there is about an 1/2 inch gap by the hob filter where I cut the plastic guard to make it fit. I just don't want to get an escape artist... because I'm looking at getting some ghost shrimp. Which leads me to this question. I read the ghost shrimp are better at scavenging and algae eating that amano shrimp. Also read that ghost shrimp will kill and eat snails... Is this true?
 
In response to Brad, I haven't heard of any ghost shrimp escaping a tank. In fact, the only shrimp I've ever heard of escaping was one of my green shrimp (when I had them). He climbed a sponge filter cord and fell to his late-night death.

As for scavenging/algae eating, ghosts won't touch algae. Amanos will mow it down as much as they can. Both are about equal when it comes to scavenging.

Way back when I had amanos, they would periodically ambush snails, pounding a hole in their shell and picking out the flesh. I know ghosts commonly eat smaller shrimp, such as cherries, so both of them would probably eat the snails.
 
Thanks for the reply. I think I'll get both and see what happens, unless it's a bad idea to mix them in the same tank. I don't have snails yet, but I assume that I will. I accidently put some plants in with snail eggs on them. I should have dipped them first or looked for that matter. I took them right out a few hours later when I noticed and scraped all the eggs off, but I'm sure I missed one or two... I'm hoping I luck out and don't get any, but I"m pretty sure I will.
