glass vs. acrylic tops

....hows the hand man?

i vote glass.

It's doing alright. Not a good spot to slice but it'll heal. Thanks for askin'

I second the glass vote.

I actually have an acrylic top that was custom made. It is on my 33 gal and I have really come to hate it. It bows now and does not sit on the trim flat. I picked it up as a trade so it did not cost me anything, but I would not do it again.

Acrylic is evil. It sliced me. (although I am making another acrylic structure due to the cheapness and ease of use... I'll be wearing gloves this time around.)

If you are making your own top, acrylic is easier to cut to size, at least for me. And of course it won't shatter if you drop it.
Other than that, glass is far superior IMO.

BTW: Lowes will cut acrylic to your specifications for free. Just came back from there. Thats right! Let someone else risk their digits! (PS: Home Depot no longer cuts acrylic because it's too dangerous and their insurance wont cover it--- so go to lowes where they still do that stuff!)

i cant stand the hard water stains that my glass tops get, its gets to the point where it affects that amount of light getting into the aquarium. And you cannot get it off

You can get it off. It takes vinegar, steel wool or razor blade, and plenty of elbow grease. That is where glass is better than acrylic. I hate trying to clean mine! I have also used hydrochloric acid (swimming pool acid) to remove it from glass and plastic.
