Glow in the dark Sushi.

/me giggles

Daily Fail FTW

The Daily Mail is a joke...I wouldn't believe anything I read on it, because it's a piece of crap tabloid.

However, this was just on PFK, so apparently they're not getting the joke either:

Here is the organization they referenced, the Center for Genomic Gastronomy:

This is from the link Aaron shared:

My good friend Zack Denfeld, a self-described information ecologist and lecturer at Pacific Northwest College of Art, is developing a creative form of resistance through his Center for Genomic Gastronomy. Taking a somewhat Yes Men-inspired, tongue-in-cheek approach, Zack is extending the logic of GMO’s to their unnatural conclusion by putting them in situations their inventor’s never considered. In his first experiment with the Center for Genomic Gastronomy, Zack made sushi rolls out of GloFish—a patented brand of GM fluorescent zebrafish, which is publicly available as a pet. The idea, as Zack explains in the above video, is to give people the opportunity to beta test transgenic fish before the FDA approves GM salmon—soon to be the first genetically-engineered animal for human consumption.

We’ve made a number of recipes with these [GloFish], so you don’t have to wait for approval from the government to try these transgenic fish if you’re interested. What’s really interesting about this is they’ve been existing in science labs and all of a sudden one guy had a really interesting market strategy, which was to make them available to the public. And we think that’s really innovative and we’re building on his innovation by cooking with them. I don’t know how happy he is about that, but I want to ask you how happy you are with these recipes. If you’re all for transgenic foods, you’ll love my sushi rolls. If you don’t like my glowing sushi rolls you may want to tell the US FDA to hold off on that transgenic salmon. The decision is up to you. You are no longer passive. You are active in this process.

I read this as I am studying for a quiz in my Biotech class about GE crops...LMAO.

Anyways, the FDA doesn't seem to take things like this lightly. I highly doubt something like this would have even gone through in this matter without heavy review. Granted, I don't know of any study showing that, for example, GFP ingestion is even an issue. My guess is consuming this "sushi" wouldn't amount to any extraordinary health concerns. But that may be another debate altogether...;)

to me it really seemed about as plausible as bonsai kittens,

and the Fail article has been going around a couple of social networks this week.

happy friday!

Kinda sorta off topic... sry, if need be.

I read this as I am studying for a quiz in my Biotech class about GE crops...
Nice : )
Maybe you can help me with some of my concerns or whatevers, because of things I've read/heard?

I've heard that some of these gm plants(think it was corn or wheat) are actually killing bee's. You know anything about this? This one really bugs me(no, no pun was intended... just the best I came up with on the PG lvl)...

Also heard/read that GM Corn really screws up neighboring non-GM Corn? Anything on this one?

I've never been much into politics. Well, except for a good hard look after they decided to destroy our economy, and left me jobless. I always thought... yea, they're a bunch of low life greedy folk. Just taking all the money they can. But what I see of them these days is uberly disgusting on many lvls.

And not sure if I heard anything about these GM plants being lower in nutrition too? But if thats the case, and along with the already mentioned. We are basically destroying our somewhat natural(the kind that will revert back to it's original plant, like a crossbread tomato.) food source. With GM plants that are low in nutrients, mess with near by plants that are normal, and are killing the bee's that we need to grow a tomato?

One more...
I've also hear the the U.S. is the only "non-third world" country that will even aloow GM plants to be grown. Anything on this?

...the FDA doesn't seem to take things like this lightly.
Well, atleast not until someone, like say... Monsanto hands them a dollar.
How many congressman have or do work for Monsanto? lol

Gotta wonder how much money Monsanto gave the FDA so they could buy a vowel, I mean whole word... "Organic"!
Really? It's true. "Everything" does have a price! lol

I'll preface this by saying I've only recently been learning about the technology and biology behind GMOs, so I'm no expert.

I have not looked into any issue with bees, however I am aware that a few years back there was a media scare about Bt corn pollen being deadly for monarch butterflies. Realistically there was no threat because only one strain was specific enough (and was being phased out) and the exposure was minimal. But I will try and see if there are any recent publications relating to bees. I hope it was just over-hyped and not actually a problem.

There definitely have been issues with GM/non GM hybrids, mostly in regard to intellectual property rights and patent issues. Essentially the problem presented is that since the gene is patented, any subsequent plant with that gene is property of the company regardless of where it may pop up. In some circles Monsanto has been practically demonized over this issue. I'm not well versed on the business side of GMO's so I'm not the best person to ask.

Nutrition-wise a lot of engineering is actually done to increase nutrition. For example, some crops are designed to target vitamin deficiencies. I think it may interest people that the overwhelming majority (>80%) of some crops such as corn, soybean and sugar beet are GE crops and have been for a while now. Personally, I'm not currently concerned but I understand why people may be totally for buying 100% organic. Just a different lifestyle choice IMO, but I'm no nutritionist either. Everything on the market has been FDA approved, although I'm sure some people don't put a lot of stock into that...

As for being the only 3rd world country, I am almost positive Canada has GE crops. I do know, however, that Europe has been a lot more opposed to the idea than over here and are just recently opening up to the idea. I'm not sure what their current progress is, though.

Thanks for the reply. It sent me wandering around the net finding some interesting stuff. And probably alot more interesting if I knew what they were talking about in Monsanto's Patents.

You were right about Canada. But, it's worse than we either of us expected.
This guy claims the main GMO types have contaminated 100% of the land there...
A thread I started to quit high jacking these glow fish thread ; )

I really don't predict that we will ever go back to mass produced food NOT being genetically modified. The most we can hope for is that for avoidance purposes, it will be clearly labeled, rather than the non-GM food being declared as such, which is the way it currently seems to be.

Just like we will never go back to non-factory farming practices. Unless you go out of your way to avoid it, the meat you eat will have been treated with hormones and antibiotics. The cruelty is a separate issue...if we are talking about HEALTH concerns, then I would say it's very clear that it is bad for us to be eating residual hormones and antibiotics. How bad is the question, because of course it's much worse for us to smoke or barely get any exercise.

GM food has broader implications than the above. Is it a direct health threat to humans? Does it cause cancer, or other diseases? I doubt we will know for a long time...I'm sure there are studies being started, but it will probably take decades before they are completed.

Think of how long artificial sweeteners have been on the market, and we are still sort of unclear as to whether they are ok for us. In large part, yes, but do they contribute to insulin resistance? Do they mess with our brain, and regulatory system of hunger/satiation? I would argue that yes, they do...however if someone who is addicted to soda switches from Mt. Dew to Diet Mt. Dew, I don't doubt the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks.

But anyhow, back to GM food...it does disrupt the ecosystem. Bees and butterflies are just one example. However we have shown over and over that we are not opposed to this, provided we benefit from it substantially. I do think we benefit from it substantially in the SHORT term, but in the long term, it would be much better if the mainstream population would shift towards sustainability. If more people grew their own food for themselves and their neighbors (which we are starting to see) we wouldn't need to feed our exponentially exploding populace with GM food.
