I have asked this in another forum already but I was wondering if anybody knew anything about what would make a ghost shrimp glow? Also if there are any species of ghost shrimp that glow in the dark, please any information is helpful. If anybody has experienced this that would help out also. thannks

Are your shrimps currently glowing?

I know that under UV light, scorpion shells will glow in the dark. For example, scorpion researchers go out into the desert with a black light to find their specimens, because it makes them much easier to spot.

I haven't heard of this working on any shrimps, but I guess it's worth a shot. Please don't try to inject them with any neon paints, as fish dealers will sometimes do with tetras and other poor fishes.

No it was only one shrimp and it is now in the stomach of one of my crabs, since its no longer there. But it was pitch dark in my room where the tank is placed, and its glow was a faint bluish green not a bright glow. But thanks for your in put.

lol no the crab is not glowing now, but I jsut found some information on the subject. The shrimp might have been infected with bioluminecent bacteria and pasted away due to this. The shrimp was acting quite strange and started to become a frosty white instead of a clear. No light was used in this process, so I do not think it can be replicated without that certain strain of bacteria. Hopefully the crab that ate the body will not suffer the same fate. Thanks for everybodies input.

Ahhh, glowing bacteria. I've seen that stuff in the ocean, but haven't heard of it in FW, but wouldn't rule it out. It's pretty neat, I'd kick the water and a trail of little glowing green dots would appear. Cool...

I remember a documentary that mentioned that the bioluminescense in bacteria may have evolved as a protective thing. The example they used was a shrimp! It ate some bacteria, it glowed, and a predatory squid ate the shrimp. Bacteria benefit because there are fewer shrimp to eat them after that. Kinda far fetched, but it just made me think of that.

Good foot work tracking that one down! Anyway, too bad your shrimp died. It woulda been a cool party trick. :)
