Chevy Volt sales fall in February

March 4, 2011 — Sales of Chevrolet’s Volt were down 40 units in February compared to January sales, according to the company’s monthly sales report.
GM sold 321 of the new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in January and 281 in February. The numbers were released shortly after GM announced plans to make the Volt available nationwide by the end of the year.
At the end of January, the car had been delivered to customers in the Washington, D.C. area, California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Texas. Deliveries to Michigan are planned this spring and the car is supposed to be available nationwide during the second quarter of the year, with deliveries starting on the east coast.
Overall, Chevrolet reported a February sales climb of 69 percent in February when compared to the same month last year. Nearly half of the month’s 142,919 vehicles sold were four-cylinder models. The largest gains were made in Cruze, Equinox, Traverse and Silverado sales. Click here for more February sales highlights.

I want one but I really can see paying 50G's. If it was around 30 I would jump on it. I think they are trying to recoup the start up cost on the car too fast. The Volt is meant to compete with the UGLY Prius and UGLY leaf when it comes out. We shouldn't root for it to fail. We should root for them to lower the price.
 
If they're trying to sell the car based on the economics of saving gasoline it's gonna be a hard sell. That's a LOT of gasoline, even at $6.00 per gallon before you're going to realize any savings by having to purchase this VERY overpriced car to do it. I'm not sure I'd "jump on it" at $30K either. Only way this car makes sense is if it were priced similarly to a Honda civic or a VW Jetta. People who are feeling the crunch of high priced gasoline are not going to feel any relief by substituting huge car payments for gasoline payments.

I'm not rooting for Chevy to fail, but the Volt is way over priced, and I hope they realize this and correct it. We should be able to compete in the electric car market with a vehicle in the mid-size sedan or larger and have it cost a reasonable amount (less than $30,000) To make a viable change in combating gas prices and reducing our dependency on foreign oil we need the "every man" or woman car, not one priced on the edge of luxury vehicles!

Exactly. If you can afford the Volt, you can afford the gas! A few wealthy folks buying it as a novelty won't change a thing.
 
I'd hardly call a two month sales trend indicative of a complete program failure. Bottom line, its the first extended-range electric vehicle to hit the market, so yeah its going to be expensive. We probably should have completely given up on cell phones too since the first models were so cost prohibitive. The price will come down as technology advances and more companies provide competition.

lol they lowered how many they are going to build this year from 60k to 10k. maybe not a complete failure but its sure not off to a good start.
 
The plan for the first production year has been 10k cars since c. 2008. The original forecast was 60k when the car was in the concept phase, but when it went to production they backed off in favor of a more conservative start based on the limited release area and rollout plan.

The only problem have is that I (and every other US taxpayer) helped pay for every unit sold due to both a direct govt subsidy on the price of the car, and the bogus GM bailout. I guess I am rooting for Chevy and the rest of GM to fail as they should have last year.
