I've been using it exclusively since I got my account, I don't even use the account I have with my ISP. Gmail has a nice, useable interface, good search function, a gig of space and good spam filtering. I've been quite happy with the service, and you hardly even notice the text ads at the bottom of the page.
I'll chip in: the larger allowed attachments is the key for me. Most other free web mail is dumpy with little attachments. Also, with G-Mail, you can use outlook, thunderbird or any other email program because g-mail gives you the POP and SMTP settings. I use gmail and never even see the ads because I never go to the site.

I forgot to mention the POP access. I don't bother with an email client on my pc but it does allow me to check my gmail account from my cell phone which is kinda handy when out of town for more than a couple days.

I love the GMail extension for Firefox, very handy!
I've got Gmail & browse on Firefox, but I'm not aware of the extension. What's it all about?

It puts the gmail 'M' icon in the right corner of the browser status bar and has a counter to show the number of unread messages in your account.

The BugMeNot extension is also very nice if you visit websites that make you register just to view site content (ex. http://www.nytimes.com). When the extension is installed you just right-click in the username box and select the BugMeNot menu option and it populates username and password for the site. You can even submit usernames and passwords for sites not registered at BugMeNot.
