Lately my purple spotted goby has reduced his food intake to very little. He just sits there now and doesn't do anything. Anyone have any ideas on this. im almost thinking dropsy cause his scales look raised up but im not for sure. Thanks in advance.

perhaps. one thing with gobies is that most of them are BW species. I dont know about your particular one but that could also be a cause. somtihng to look in to

I was gonna say the same thing, that I'd never heard of a totally freshwater goby. But I found this http://www.australianrainbowfish.co...es_menu.htm?aus_gobies_vic_name.htm~leftFrame

Does that look like him? Apparently it is FW, but I don't know anything about this species.

But to help any fish that's sick, we need to know your water parameters. Especially ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. What is your water changing schedule? We just need to make sure that the fish is in healthy, clean water.

Also what size is your tank? What else do you have in there with that fish? How long have you had this particular guy?

slowly acclimating him to brack water over a month or so should do the trick, i know dragon gobies get slimy when in fw for too long, and chromides lose their color, and get metallic paint under their eyes

Apparently this species, the purple spotted gudgeon (Mogurnda adspersa), is tolerant of a wide range of salinities from fresh to super-salty. So maybe giving it some marine salt (to make it a brackish tank) would help it. But we need to know what else is living with it, because making it a brackish tank might not help everyone.

Very attractive fish, though. When you get the right light, its sides take on an irridescent sheen.

Purple-spotted Gudgeon is the common name, he is in fw with some catfish and a butterfly fish. i never see the catfish bother him. i've had him for about three months. i put fw aquarium salt in about every other water change and change the water 1 to 2 times a week. he was very aggressive up to 2 weeks ago but then just started sitting there. sometimes he will sit at the surface but just under the water level. i dont think the marine salt would settle w/ the cats but im not for sure. thanks for the help.

you will need a seporate tank to do a BW setup....cats will not enjoy it

Most gobies can tolerate FW in their young years, however as they mature they require Brackish. Hence why a lot of folks purchase gobies at say, PetCo as "freshwater" and then can't quite grasp why their buddy Goby is looking ill in a month or two.

Good luck man!

I have the same fish as you and i am having exactly the same problem, the only food he will eat is frozen blood worm and i have to put it right in front of his mouth before he will eat any. He also sits near the surface and seems to mope. I have my 1 with many cats,1 convict and a pair of pacu's. he does not get bothered by them that i see but he does seem to get the odd small lesion from time to time.
