HEY
I'm going away for a few days (3) over the new years period, and was wondering what to do about my tank. should i get someone to feed them while im not here?? should someone turn the lights off at night, then on again in the morning, or will they be ok with just a bit of sunlight from the window???

You don't need to worry about feeding them over only three days, fish can safely go much longer than three days without food.

I would invest a few dollars in a simple timer for your lights and use it all the time, not just when you are away. This will allow your fish to have a regular schedule and you won't have to worry about turning the lights on and off.

i will get the timer, man, my fish will be psycho when i get back after 3 days of no food, but i heard this is actually good for them, because it cleans out thier digestive system
 
They likely go longer than that in nature. Fish and most other cold-blooded animals are designed to go a couple days or longer without food.
 
I bought a timer and hooked it up to a 6 outlet strip. The timer turns all 3 of my tanks on and off everyday. a REALLY nice addition. Advice: buy the digital model that can be set for many settings..!!!

Just about any quality hardware store will carry a fairly wide variety of plug-in timers ranging in price from $4 - $40. Personally, I prefer the digital timers over the mechanical type.
