Hi help needed,

I have a Juwel Rekord line 70g. i have used it in the past as i freshwater and now i'm wanting to find out if i can use the tank for a marine set up???? any ideas ???

the tank have a filter which sits in the corner of the tank in its housing.. am i right in thinking that with any live rock + sand the filter will not be needed???

i know that a protein skimmers my be needed but will if work with the tank??


A Powerhead.... I need this for circulation correct? what's the best brand and how powerful one will I need for a 70 gallon tank and will it fit ???

Lastly, lighting. Obviously the stock lighting that comes with my Juwel is just for freshwater fish?????

so is it really suited for corals and such. what do i need ??
 
First of welcome to AC!
i would recommend a filter still even with live rock if its ur first salt tank it takes some time and basic knowledge to run a just biological set up depending on rock only. the powerheads are needed for both surface disruption for oxygen exchange and also for even flow so there arnt any dead spots. a skimmer can act as a sole organics remover in a established system with only live rock and powerheads but it make it easy i recommend a canister filter which would add the benefit of chemical filtration and more variability(Fluval,Cascade,and Ehime are good brands) also a refugum/skimmer would also benefit u greatly over just a skimmer. as for lighting it depends on what u want coral wise.
 
Hello there, and welcome to the forums..

A 70g sounds really good to me...when you say you are waiting to see if you can use it for marine, what is it exactly you waiting to find out?..

The internal filter can be used if you so wish, but with 1 - 1.5lbs pounds of live rock per gallon, the need for a filter of sorts in no longer required. The mechanical filtration will be carried out by the rock. By all means, you can use the filter itself for chemical filtration ( carbon, rowaphos etc ) or just utilize it for extra water circulation..

Protien skimmer is needed in my opinion and will work just fine. You may find though that you will have to modify the hood to accomodate it...I.E Cutting a section of the rear out so the skimmer can fit onto the tank..

Circulation really depends on the types of corals you want to keep. Research lots on what you want to have in the tank as this will dictate what equipment you may need to purchase..You will certainly need a couple of good powerheads in there..probably at "least" a couple rated at about290 Gallon per hour..

If you decide to go with fish and live rock in the tank, then the normal lighting that came with the tank will suffice, maybe add a marine blue actinic of about 40w...and maybe a moonlight kit to simulate dusk and dawn..

If you decide on corals, then really you want to be looking at either 4 or 5 tube T5 unit, or better yet, 2 x 150 metal halides and some marine blue actinics for suppliments..Metal Halides are, in mu opinion, the best you can go for and with these, you also get a shimmering effect through the tank which is a little more natural looking for the tanks inhabitants...

Hope this info helps you a little..So, what you need to decide on is what you want in there and do loads of reading and research and then you can start to plan out what equipment you need exactly to acheive your little part of the ocean...

whats conflicting? i agree with bout what u said an what i did i just recommended a different route and some better filtration to make life easier lol
 
You say use a filter, i say dont.....

I used a cannister filter when i first started keeping marines...If i was advised correctly from the start, i would never of brought a filter, i do not have a need for one at all.

I believe if your going to start up, and your new to marine keeping, and want to do it right, then that includes not spending money on something that you dont really need where as that money can be channeled into buying something else like live rock, a better skimmer etc etc.....

I dont neccesarily believe that just because your a beginner in marine that that you should have a cannister filter when the live rock does it for you..Using the live rock for the filtration, if anything, makes it simpler for the beginner as its less equipment to get setup, something else to go wrong amongst other reasons...

At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong to the debate of using a cannister filter for marine...But, when people say to use one, to me, it goes against everything that i have read and learnt from experience, documentation and many other Reefers...

thanks boys,

so just to let you know what i was think of having.. i was just wanting to have some live rock and fish.

RED SEA BERLIN AIR 60 PROTEIN SKIMMER is one that i have looked at would this be good or should i look at some thing else..

power head i have seen is Ehiem 1250....

with both of these i have looked for something that i feel willl fit in the tank ...

i was looking to stock the tank with ..

x2 clown fish
x2 sea horse's

and others once i have it up and running i wish to if anything keep it understocked so that i can get the levels under control

should i also be look at a clean up crew ???
