Going on vacation - no water change for 5 weeks?

Thanks for all the comments. I'll think about them and let you know what my plan is.

Hmmmmm, that's a tough question. I would ask the friend to at least change out two buckets of water each week and to rinse the filter media out. I know it's a lot to ask but if he's going to look after your fish, make sure he knows what it all entails. Five weeks without a water change is asking for trouble.

Just completed my last water change and added the instructed dosage of EasyBalance. (I have no long term plan to use EB, but for short term situation like mine it looks llike the right product.) Numbers on the 72G:
NH3 - 0 PH - 7.4
NO2 - 0 GH - 180
NO3 - <10 KH - 50
My friend will refill evaporated water and add weekly dosage of EasyBalance. I'll report back when I return from vacation.

Update - I just got back home from my vacation. My friend performed maintenance exactly as planned above. Today's numbers on the 72G before any WC.
NH3 - 0 PH - 7.6
NO2 - 0 GH - 180
NO3 - 20 KH - 80
All fishes survive my month long vacation! For my application EasyBalance worked. I would definitely recommend this product for similar applications.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback.

What was used for the top offs, tap or bottled water?

Only tap water was used since we estimated the evaporation to be no more than 20% for 5 weeks. We did cut down on the feeding to one VERY light feeding per day.

Easy Balance is garbage...IMO.

It seems to have prevented a pH dip in the tank, though. Do you think the pH would have stayed exactly where it was without the EasyBalance? I'm just wondering, because I was impressed that there was no drop in pH after that long without a proper water change.

I am not promoting EasyBalance for long term usage to replace water change. My real life experience shows that this product does work for my requirement of zero fish casualty over a one month leave without proper water change.
