The advantge of the UG filter tops is the "bars" that prevent fish from swimming down through them. I used a pvc elbow on the 33 setup, and I suspect that's how the BN were getting through to the other side. Go with pool filter sand (I actually use size 0 gravel in most of my tanks) rather than play sand. Simply much easier to rinse and maintain.

I don't mean to be superstitious, but it always seems as though pool filter sand gives me diatom woes for much longer than play sand. They eventually go away, but it's months! I also hope to do cories, and they seem to prefer the softer, finer play sand. Sugar sized grains, I guess, as opposed to salt grains.
You're right though, it needs maintaining...I fluff it up with a bamboo skewer, stock loads of MTS, etc.
