Making up a batch of gel food for my fancy goldfish this week- anyone have any favorite recipes or anything they would like to share? I found a bunch by using Google already, but if anyone has any favorites they would like to share here, I'd love to see them! Any other information or stories about home made gel food and your fish also welcome! :rolleyes:
 
Is gel food supposed to be better than flake? What's the advantages? Is it suited more for goldfish?

Just curious as I don't have any experiences with it but am intrigued.
 
Gel food is food you make at home, instead of buying it. It's not just for goldies, you can make it for most types of fish, I would imagine. Basically, you get a protein source (like cooked salmon), and a bunch of fruits and veggies, other healthy ingredients, puree them all up, add gelatin (plain- no sugar, dye, or flavor) to set it all into a gel, and TAA DAA! Gel food. The benefits are that it has more vitamins, and higher quality ingredients than the commerically made stuff- and can improve color, growth, etc. Gonna make up my first batch this morning, and give it a whirl for their evening feeding. :D

And gelatin is ok for fish to eat long term? I suppose it is just ground up cow hooves... Eating paste in school never killed anyone, lol.

To my knowledge, gelatin is just collagen and protein- so, it won't do anything to harm omni/ carnivore fish at all. If you had a strictly vegetarian fish, you can use agar agar powder- I wouldn't do the agar agar with snails, though, as it contains copper, which can eventually kill them.

Thanks, Larry! There are also mystery snails in the goldie tank- and they do LOVE the gel food! I made sure to include broccoli and kale in the formula, so they have some extra calcium, there. I've also been dropping a little glob into the tank with my newly hatched mystery snails. It seems to be a big hit with everyone!
