I used pellets for my protein base, as well, as I still have some left. May as well not let it go to waste! Beefed it up with peas & carrots, broccoli, steamed kale, spinach, a few strawberries, a small handfull of blueberries, canned pumpkin, a clove of garlic, and then the gelatin. I am thinking spirulina will be a GREAT addition for the next batch. Thanks so much for the suggestion! :D

very cool wonder if i can find a betta formula? i have some tilapia in the freezer. hmm....

This has intrigued me....fish jello? What did yours look like Jamie? All I can find online is pre-made store-bought stuff. What's your recipe exactly???

It looks like a big blubbery cube of brown stuff, and then kind of like canned cat food, after crumbling it. Firmer texture, though. The recipe I did is as follows- I just looked at some other ones, and made this one up. 1 cup pellets, presoaked in 1 cup water. 1/2 bag frozen peas and carrots (thawed, not drained- this is for all frozen veggies listed), 1/2 bag frozen broccoli, 1 block frozen spinach, 6 frozen strawberries, 1/3 cup frozen blue berries, 1 cup steamed kale, 1/2 red bell pepper, 1/2 yellow bell pepper, 1/2 orange bell pepper, 1 large clove garlic, 1/2 can of canned pumpkin, 16 packets gelatin dissolved in 1 1/2 cups boiling water. Puree all of the veggies, fruit, garlic, pumpkin, and pellets in a blender until smooth (you may need to do small batches- add very small amounts of water, as needed, to keep things going smoothly). Pour into your largest mixing bowl, and set aside. Bring your 1 1/2 cups water to a full, rolling boil, add gelatin and stir until well dissolved. Pour gelatin into veggie puree, and stir well, until completely mixed together. Pour goop into a large, rectangular cake pan, and chill covered for 4 hours. Remove from fridge, and cut into 1" x 1" cubes. Keep 1 or 2 out in the fridge, until feeding, and freeze the rest in a gallon sized freezer bag. This makes A LOT of food- fills the whole cake pan, and pretty much the full gallon sized freezer bag. Before feeding, thaw cubes over night, and crumble with a fork into small pieces- drop into the tank as you would with any other food- keep unused portion in the fridge for up to 3 days. They may spit it out a couple of times with the first feeding or 2 because of the unfamiliar texture- after they get used to it, mine go totally NUTS for it. They really do love it.

Holy cow! That sounds like a lot of work. And I'm a 20 year old in my second apartment...haven't invested in a blender yet, haha! You have me sold though, now I want to try gel.

Repashy foods are my fav to use since they are really simple to make and the fish love them.

I did a little reading on the Repashy though...sound pretty low maintenance, though not quite as organic. I'm confused about which one would be best for goldies though??

haven't heard of repashy- but will be researching it now, for sure! The gel food does take a bit of time to make, and is definitely more work than just dumping commercial food in the tank- one recipe will last several months, though, so you don't have to do it too often. When you buy the blender, definitely spring the extra $ and get a really nice one. It will last you like 10+ years, and there is a HUGE difference. The cheap one I used to have could pretty much handle mixing only liquids together, and nothing else.

You can take a small jar of baby food, throw in some flakes, crushed up pellets, whatever basically. Make you baby food hot, mix in whatever you want then add gelatin. Put it in a pan and let if cool. It will harden an you cut it as big as you want it. You can even freeze it.

Doesn't gelatin contain collagen? I was reading that collagen can be hard for fish to digest.
