Gold Nugget Pleco

IMO they need driftwood. Ive kept a gold nugget before, and a peppermint. I had them for about a month each and then they died. I was feeding them wafers, cucumber, squash. Both died and I did a little more research and found they would like some wood. I added a huge piece of wood to my tank and let it get settled. I added another gold nugget and fed it the same way, its been doing great for about 9 months now. So it could either be the wood or maybe I got a crappy gold nugget. They were all from the same store.

I got some driftwood from Petco for the tank.

I will be getting plants this week for the tank.

I have two established 2.5 gallon tanks so I'm going to add some rocks from those tanks into the 29 gallon when I get fish. I'll be adding fish slowly until I reach a good population level.

I can't wait . . . . those plecos are really gorgeous!!!

test or get your water tested. Don't just add fish slowly and blindly. Wait until the tank is fully cycled before adding an expensive fish. If you don't know what cycling is, please search this site. It's been discussed many, many times, and is the souce of a lot of trouble for a lot of fish.

drift wood is a must for gold nuggets and they are very delicate plecos at first but once they become confortable they will become more hearty fish. the aclimation process is the most stressfull for these plecos IMO. But they love driftwood and caves mine loves to hide and nibble on driftwood he even comes out too munch pellets now.

Ive been 'implanting' NLS pellets into the cucumber I put down for mine. Seems to like it.

make sure the driftwood is real, aquarium safe wood and not grapevine wood. the grapevine will get fungus-y, not meant to be submerged.

I have 2 little pieces of driftwood in the tank already, but I'm going to shop around for a bigger centerpiece.

Driftwood really adds to the feel of the tank.

I am waiting until the water is ready before adding inhabitants . . .

I got my driftwood from Petco as they have a couple tanks of submerged driftwood all ready to go . . .

You will truly enjoy this fish, one of the most beautiful plecs in my opinion.

they have a reputation for being very territorial to other GN's. I keep mine seperated for that reason. However, the LFS had a shipment of about 20 in a tank without any aggression. I don't know how just two would do.

My guess would be to provide hiding spaces and food for them and they might be OK. Keep a close eye, though, and be prepared to save the weaker fish.
