Hi, I have just a small aquarium with a couple of fish in it and my snail (that I'm quite attached to!!) Last week he crawled out of my tank and fell onto our tiles, cracking his shell and generally shaking himself up quite abit. We thought he was dead until the next day when his tentacles (I think that's what they're called) came out. He now sits in the bottom of my tank (hidden from my fish so they don't eat him) but doesn't move. He has opened up underneath a bit, but won't actually move around or go to the surface for air. I'm worried he'll starve or suffocate. Has anyone experienced something similar. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

can you see the flesh of his mantle? (undershell?)

Yes, I think I can. There is a hole in his shell, I can see white flesh through that, underneath I can see up inside his shell.

he may recover, but you must remove him to a separate tank. his shell will eventually rebuild itself. I think you might be able to make it renuild faster if you add some calcium to his water in the separate tank.

Thanks for your advice, but I don't have a separate tank. Could I move him to a pot filled with tank water and just change the water frequently??

Depending on the kind of damage, you may need to repair his shell. I've never had this happen with my snails, as the tank top is secure with no holes.

My recommendation is to take a good look at http://applesnail.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=9&sid=309ffbed166aa5ac7a224f1b39baee3c
there are several stickies on repairing snail shells, and should help you figure out how bad the damage from his fall is.

Good luck, I hope he's ok. I know how easy it is to get attached to these guys.

Thanks to the people who took time to give me advice. I now have my snail in a pot with a bit of tank water, but unfortunately there is no movement on his (or her) part. I even put a piece of aquarium plant in with him/her for food, but still no response. Maybe I killed him by putting him back into the tank :( Ah well, I'll wait and see, meanwhile we live and learn. Thanks again.
