Golden Chinese Algae Eaters

They are the same species. I have trouble believing that a fish is less aggressive because its a different color pattern. I say it's untrue.

I completely agree to that, I have a hard time believing they are not as aggressive because they lack the blotchy stripe down the side. I would hold out for SAE's instead.

GCAE are not too aggressive when they're young, but become really territorial. They also don't eat algae as advertised. They may nip at it when young, but prefer to be fed different food when they get older.

This has been my experience also. Mine became very territorial as it got bigger. It would chase and bully the other fish when they entered his territory. As for algae, he doesn't seem to be too interested, maybe I have the wrong kind for it (?). When I upgraded to a larger tank, I moved all the other fish and got some otos for the algae. My GCAE is still in the old tank, not sure what to do with it.

Another myth debunked...
They sure are pretty though. But... nothing too pretty about a fish that latches onto another one and chews on it - a little too bloodthirsty for my tank ;)

Keeping fish sure is an exercise in patience - waiting for tanks to cycle, waiting for fish to come in to the LFS, waiting, waiting, waiting....

Everyone is such a CAE hater anymore..

Just because it won't rid you of algae doesen't mean they're a worthless fish. IMO the best algae eater is a foam pad with an arm attached and water changes anyways.

I like them, and with the right tank mates, obviously not your typical community fish, they can be nice additions to large tanks
