Goldfish and plants

I was just wondering if there are any plants that would survive in a tank with goldfish. I have a 30 gallon tank with a good filter (though I'm planning to upgrade the filter soon) and I have gravel as the substrate (natural colors, not dyed). There is a fantail, about 3", and 2 comets, about 3" each, living in the tank though the comets are supposed to be rehomed to a friend with a bigger setup because I rescued them from a 1 gallon hex tank and I know they need more than 30 gallons. The temperature in the tank is around 20-22 degrees celsius (68-72 fahrenheit). I will have to check the details of the light later as I'm not really sure of it offhand. I would like to know how much trouble it would be to turn this into a planted tank... would the goldfish eat the plants? Are there any plants that they won't eat? Would the plants survive in that temperature range? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I have water sprite, java moss, and java ferns in with a group of 6 goldies (for 3 months now with this group) with no issues. This has been my goldie QT tank for my pond, so technically I've had it up since last September with goldies in it and plants in it, and no problems with them messing with the plants. These have all been common, comet, and shubunkin varieties of goldies. It's a 40 gallon breeder with canister filtration (Sunsun302). My tank is room temp, so during the winter it was low 60s and right now it's about 75 to 78. No issues with either the fish or the plants at any of those temp ranges.

Hope that helps. :)

I have anubias, crypts, swords and African fern in my goldfish tank. Onion plants, hornswort and guppy grass work too.

I have had bad experiences with goldfish and everything but Java fern. I had a beautiful planted tank of them when the goldies were younger, but as they got older (about a year), they became total plant rippers. Sometimes they don't eat the plants, but pull the leaves of of them for fun ( this is what happened with my anubias.) I would say put in a few inexpensive plants at a time and see how they fare before buying large amounts of plants for a goldie tank. Even my swords did not survive "Wrath of Goldie." Score? Plants: zero; Well-fed five year old goldies: one :)

I have tried amazon swords in my tank, they all got ate. I recently put Elodea in, they got dug. So I have gone for a java moss wall and some tall hair grass plants.

So far they don't seem interested in the tall hair grass and the java moss hasn't taken hold yet. But I know where you're coming from, Goldies and michevious and like to destroy plants for the hell of it. It's what makes them great fish!

always had luck with some nice large anubia. with my goldies.^_^

my goldies dont eat or mess with my big slik plants but they will destroy live ones so im all silk now.

My pond goldies did pretty well with anacharis. They broke it apart and rooted it out of where I placed it, but the plant survived floating loose in the water just fine.

Silly goldfish, they're like slippery two year olds. I have my goldies in a tank with a couple of good sized anubias, not sure of the species but the leaves are really thick. The goldies thus far have not bothered them, they consumed all my floating plants though. I think the answer to this question depends on your fish. As someone mentioned above just do a little at a time and go cheap so that the plants won't be a huge loss if the goldies decide to redecorate.
