Lastnight we went to our local county fair. Of course they had the whole "win a live goldfish" set up there. Poor fish. I have two little girls who we have won them for in the past. Three and two years ago. All still living by the way.

Well lastnight my sister was with us and she won one for her little girl. Of course this means I'm taking him home and putting him in the empty 20 I had until I can make sure he doesn't have ick or something worse.

The guy is TINY! About a half inch maybe. A couple questions on him though. Should I go ahead and treat for ick just as a preventive measure or wait and see how it goes? Also, I am giving her my 55gal to house two goldfish(oranda and Telescope Eye) my sister inherited from my grandmother. First off how long will the 55 house these three? and is this tiny guy safe with the other two? Thanks.

  • I am strongly against treating a fish for disease unless you know for sure your fish actually has it.
  • The 55 should house them for about 6-12 months without any stunting, depending on the size of the ohter golds.
  • How big are the other golds?

EDIT: If they are fancy golds, you should be able to keep them long term in the 55.

I wouldn't medicate unless there was evidence of the disease. It causes undue stress and may do more harm than good. How big are the other goldies (the telescope and Oranda) and is this a comet baby? If it is indeed a comet baby, you may consider putting in a pond rather than keeping them in the tank. A comet can grow to 2 feet in length and are way too fast moving for the slow bodied fancies.

oops, the two fancy ones are fairly large. 4 to 5 inches maybe. And yes this is a comet.

Ok here is another question. I am building a 195 gallon outdoor pond. Will that be large enough to house three comets for the long haul?

It's two feet deep. Not exactly square but about 5 feet wide and 3 the other way. It's like a 8 pattern.
