my fantail has had air bladder problems for about a year now. we have tried my things from putting her in a hospital tank with low water so she stays upright, treatments of different types. she recently just got over finrot, which has resurfaced even worse. she cant eat anymore because she just cant stay upright, she often crashes for 30min. or more. we have decided, since we have given her over a year to recoup somewhat and she's not, that we will euthanize her. i had read there is a mixture of i believe vodka(?) and something else that will kill the nerves, thus making it a painless passing. anyone heard of this? i really dont want to freeze her, imagine if someone froze you? i dont believe this is a humane to euthanize, sounds painful to me. any help would be great. thanks!

No Vodka!!

Vodka is a fish irritant, so don't use it!

There is a sticky up on Euthanasia...read it...parts are a bit gross but it is full of info. For me, who is very squeamish, the clove oil method is the way to go (if, as in your case, the fish is too far gone). I'm not sure on the exact dose, so read the sticky in the article corner, but it seems to be the most humane, basically clove oil is an anesthetic, so the fish goes to sleep, and if the dose is correct, goes into a coma and dies...or something like that...

Sorry in advance for your loss :sad

Clove oil available at any health food store. Mix it 3 ml clove oil to 8 ml vodka, then add that to one gallon of tank water. Too much vodka will cause the fish distress so many people leave it out altogether. If you skip the vodka the clove oil/water will require a fair bit of shaking to get the oil dispersed, and the fish has to go in quickly.

Good luck- sometimes a peaceful ending is the best gift of all.
