Goldfish in 20 gallon long??

If you are going to buy goldfish for a Pond you want Comets, Commons, Shubunkins etc. Now while they certainly do get too big for a 20gal, thats going to take about 6 months. Move them into the pond then, and buy a couple more baby ones. After a couple of years you will have a fully stocked pond.

2 x 4-5" goldfish are OK in a 20gal, just they will get much bigger eventually. Growing goldfish in a tank for 6-12 months to give them a bit of size before moving them to a pond is perfectly fine.

Upgrade the tank to at least 30-40g before you buy any fancy goldfish.

That's bogus advice for someone willing to give a fancy a home. Not everyone has the space for 30 gallons or 55 gallons or w/e it is you reccomend. 10-15 at min per fancy and while more is always better consider how much worse off that fish would be being sold to some idiot at Walmart.

You are correct about the Walmart observation C_D; perhaps Lupin was giving size suggestion based on what the poster was suggesting as total stock (which appeared to be at least 4 fancies. I don't think I would suggest that in less than a 60 gallon tank.)I keep mine in 15 gallons/fish, and have not noticed any problems, nor do I expect to. I think that many people who are inexperienced with goldfish do not expect them to need the space they do or the attention that they do. I'm not willing to go so far as to suggest that the recommendation is "bogus."
