Goldfish In A Jar.....

If you can put him in the 5 gal for now and keep the water pristine you'd probably be fine until you can find a good deal on craigslist. A common goldfish will quickly outgrow a 5 gal but it would work temporarily if you watch the water conditions.

I personally have a 20 gal overstocked right now with a comet and red cap oranda but they are both juvies and the comet is only temporary until my brother-in-law gets his pond built. I do twice weekly 25% water changes and have pretty good filtration.

Both 5gal are pre occupied until my day off when I turn in some Jack Dempseys which need a new home since I got my pair already. Also no cooler/Ice Chest we havent gone out to the beach or park or anything in years so there was no need to buy one lol. Maybe I could buy one of those syrafoam coolers??? I got 2 ummmm filters meant for my 20gals not being used cuz I wanted more filtration. Got to look on craigs.

time to explain stunting and fish health to your brother i think, try using the 'would you like to live your whole life in your cupboard' idea. then start advertising around for someone with a pond able to take the poor thing and let him help advertise for a new home for his little fish. or maybe try recycle sites like freecycle for a tank to house the fish in.

I was at the NC State fair this past weekend and I saw a booth where they had the little fish bowls and if you can toss a ping pong ball in them, you win a little feeder. The thing is, if you win five, you can trade in for a "bigger" gold fish. The bigger fish were koi, about 12-18 inches long... I couldn't believe it.
That is SO convoluted :(

Ok so the Goldfish is still in the jar gonna change the water out right now while he is at school think the water has yet to be changed in like 3-4days. Which reminds me I got to do my betta cups as well. One will be getting his tank back prob on tuesday well tomorrow or the day after. Goldfish has yet to change color from bronze to gold.

A common feeder goldfish will quickly outgrow a 5 gal? Sorry goldfish are by no means my specialty shoot I only know what I do by asking questions on here through PM and by reading online by sites provided by others. So with that how fast do goldfish grow. I know mostly cichlids and pleco's and well cichlids grow fast and ive never had a goldfish to were I could see it grow big.

AND THEN I'd write a sternly worded letter to the school about how irresponsible it is to give away feeder goldfish in a jar at a school function. I'd attach to that letter a basic outline of goldfish care, the nitrogen cycle and the cost related to the minimum tank size. I'd also make sure that they know that they'd probably killed a lot of fish by handing them out as prizes.

This. ESPECIALLY this. I expect this sort of behavior at a fair. I don't like it, but I expect it. I do not expect this sort of thing from a school. Epic fail on the whole teaching responsibility thing.

How's the fish doing? How has the conversation with your brother gone about living in a cupboard?

The fish looks ok cant really swim much there is nothing to do in the jar and no decorations just a jar war n the fish. I cant do the cupboard talk I did a similiar talk once to my lil sis and my parents yelled at me and I tell my parents my mom listens but my step dad doesnt care to him its "Just a Fish" so yeah. I dont think my parents want him with a tank in his room either. I think this one may be out of my hands which sucks. He does look lonely also.

i feel if you truly felt bad for the fish you would do something about how it is surviving, i want to say living but thats a stretch when it comes to living in a jar! even if it came down to explaining to your parents, maybe show them the info on goldfish etc, what stunting is, let them know and decide how to deal with this. its plain cruel to leave this fish to die a long slow death living in a jar it cannot even swim in. do you not have any friends/family with a pond, or could you advertise it to go to someones tank? just tell your brother it died when you take it out. i would have been driving my parents insane with going on about it if it were me as a kid.

Kelly.... Its not that I dont care but those steps have been taken and the end result was bad for me. My restrictions were tightened up on me and well I cant have that cuz my fish all need upgrades and all I need is for them to say is no more tanks and then some of my fish will be stuck in tanks to small for them. I have shown them the facts i have told them but in the end its up to my step dad and he doesnt care. Also I cant act like his fish died and give it away or keep it as my own. Not sure how you people are in the UK but alot of people here in the US only keep small goldfish for feeders that includes everyone I know minus people on here. Also I live in a small but very well populated city nobody I know here or else where that owns a pond. Im thinking of getting a big 55gal tote from work and filling it up outside and seeing if he wants to put it in there only prob is the filtration I would make the tub near ground level or in other words make a giant hole then putting the tub in there. My lil bro would have to agree also so would my mom.

I dont got money to buy a new tank or to spend 100 for a nice sized one for my bro a tub has to go outside no room in his bedroom his room is small. All my money goes to rent to my fish and to my dog oh and my car. In the middle of trying to get mo floor fixed or I cant upgrade my tanks since my floor is royaly messed up. I feel bad for the goldfish Kelly despite whether or not u believe me but my own fish I care bout more. I was hoping for ideas I hadnt thought of or what would be the point of me posting this??? If I cant do the tub idea for whatever reason then I cant really do nothing. I dont keep spare tanks wish I did but I dont. Ill try to figure something else out on my own thanks for the ideas everyone.

well definately go for the tub idea then, a non-filtered 50 gallon tub is by far a better option for the poor goldie than an unfiltered jar it cant swim in. maybe add a few oxygenating pond plants to try to keep the water a little better quality for the poor guy. i didnt mean to come across as mean or whatever, but i just cant understand why anyone cannot see the miserable life this fish leads, as in not you but your parents or brother. common sense alone should bring them to their senses in that the fish needs a bit of space. my friend has fancy goldfish, and i think they may be a bit over crowded in their 150 gallon tank, there are 15 of them, and fancies grow smaller than commons. i cannot imagine the stress that little fish is under in the conditions he is living in. maybe show your parents images on the net of what the goldie can turn into, and briefly explain stunting. surely they wouldnt house a dog in a mouse cage? i feel the same way about housing goldfish in small tanks! i apologise if i am coming across as nasty about this, i dont mean to, i just feel for the poor fish.
