Hey Now all,

I have searched all over the net trying to find some info concerning Goldfish intelligence. No luck!

Do any of you know how smart Goldfish are?

Is there a difference in intelligence from the regular ones and fancy ones?

thanks!

take care,
Jared

They have some intellegence, but I don't know if the fancy ones are different. If you have heard a rumor that a goldfish's memory lasts 3 seconds, its false. Mythbusters did a show and were able to make goldfish go through a type of maze in order to get food.

iwas going right about the myth busters thing to they actually trained th efish to got through a maze to retrive food...as long as you keep the routine i m sure any living creature has some measure of intelegance but i wouldnt thing their would be a differance in fancy to plain

This is like the question on wheather fish feel pain. Some say they do and some say they dont, even though they may have nociception. It is debated that the presence of nociception in a fish is not enough to say that it feels pain, because its reaction may be a reflex. But who knows , and who knows how smart these little creatures are. Maybe their inteligence is mistaken for instinct, that would explain the small brains, but then again how do we find this out. Very difficult I think, jmo but I think gold fish have very limited intelegance. :)

hey now all,

I am talking about intelligence compared to other fish kept in this hobby, such as oscars.

Does a full grown oscar compared to a full grown oranda obviously display higher intelligence?

I am not looking for a scientific answer, I am looking for an answer based on observation as compared to other fish kept in this hobby.

Perhaps I should have made myself more clear in my first post.

take care,
jared

I totally beleive that my goldfish is intellegent. Me and the old man got into a little argument once about weather "melon" (my pearlscale) can recognize me, or if he just sees "people". He said that he always goes to the front of the tank when he goes into the room, but I told him that he just goes nuts when I go into the room. So I made Curt go into the room and stand in front of the tank, and melon was in front, but just swam around, and went back to sucking gravel. Then I came in, and he did his usual, swim right up as fast as his little fins would carry him, almost going into a barrel roll, pressing himself up against the glass.... I love melon :D
