Goldfish Myth?

How cold was it when the four foot deep pond froze completely? It should not freeze that way completely considering the depth.

Even if the goldfish froze completely, it is unlikely to survive. Theoretically, if the goldfish froze over, so does the water inside its body causing the cellular structure to explode and the tissues expand which potentially kills a fish. Unless your friends know the bottom doesn't actually freeze as they thought, I would not believe easily the goldfish can survive freezing temperature. Why do you think it is advised to put goldfish indoors during winter season where ponds are shallow?

I agree completely.. that is why I was questioning this practice

to be honest.. I thought the guy was messing with me lol

Well, all the people I know that have goldfish in outdoor ponds don't have ponds that are 3 foot or less in depth. They NEVER bring the goldfish in and they are fine. They have goldfish and koi and the fish hibernate. If hibernating is cruel then what do you think of bears hibernating?

No one was saying hibernating is cruel. It's part of nature's wonders and I accept that. The point is why risk your pet fish from possibly being killed in the process when you could simply put them indoors for the time being assuming the pond is shallow?

Yes, if the pond is shallow then put them in. I am just stating that yes they can be left outside in a pond during the cold winter months and survive and it is not cruel as they just hibernate.

yeah.. I think the point was that its not quite as natural because goldfish arent naturally from here

not only that.. but I doubt many people have pet bears lol

you are right, not many people do have pet bears. There are a lot of fish that are domesticated that live through things that are not natural like in the wild. Staying out in the winter in a pond that is not shallow is not cruel though in my opinion and others may disagree and that is fine.

well.. I tend to agree that if you are 100% posotive it will not freeze completely it is not cruel at all

my only point was that if there is even a chance that it will.. you should take precaution and either heat it enough that it wont.. or bring them inside

I agree with this. As I stated though, everyone I know of that has an outside goldfish/koi pond has it over 3 ft deep for that very reason.

Goldfish aren't from here, true, but their native region of Asia has winters as cold as those in the northern US. They're adapted to cold weather. But they're not adapted to actually becoming frozen; only a few polar marine fishes can withstand their tissues dropping below the freezing point, and I don't think any fish can take being encased in ice long-term.
