im thinking about getting a goldfish for my 20 gallon long. i understand they dont need a heater, that you can keep one in a 20 gallon, but dont know much else. can you keep anything else with them? like mollies or minnows? what so great about them? i know alot of people keep them, but whats so great about them? do they have personality? are they fun to watch? also are there different kinds of fancy goldfish?
thanks in advance

Hi
Did you read the "stickies " ?? Don't think there is much I could add too it lol
"Goldfish basics is particularly informative. Goldfish are really collector fishes.
To my way of thinking GF are ideal choices for a pond about the worst for indoor aquariums .
There are dozens of other fish species far more suitable for tanks . far less difficult to care for !!!! gary

goldfish are very social and keeping a single would not be a very happy life for it. i would suggest a 55 gallon instead, and you could have two happy goldfish in there.

if you are not prepared to have a larger tank, i would go with a small school of smaller fish that are ok in cooler water. red cloud minnows or danios would do well. no more than ten of either though, since a 20 long isn't that big a tank. for filtration, i would recommend the aquaclear 50 hob. and plants! lots of plants! i'm running this setup (20 long, aquaclear 50, plants, driftwood) and it works well. i do have a heater in there, but it is set low, so the heater only comes on if the tank temp goes below 74/75. my stock is 5 zebra danios, 1 black ruby barb, 1 albino rainbow shark, and a momma bristlenose pleco and 5 of her babies. everyone is thriving and doing well.

Agree. Would never consider a single goldie in a 20. That would be awful.

Fortunately, you still have lots of other options for a nice little tank.
