I was just wondering if everyone thinks this is a good set up for a 40 gallon tank.

1 African knifefish
2 Elephant Noses
3 Clown Loaches
4 Angelfish
1 Dragon fish or a peackock eel
2 Red fire gourami
2 Neon Dwarf Gourami

specs are 36 by 18 by 20 somthin

one word.....

NO!

ok lets take a look at why

african knife fish: 12"
Elephant nose: 8-10"
Clown loaches: 12"
angelfish: 5" long over 6-8" tall
Peacock eel: 12"

the gouramis are fine size wise, but they do not get along with members of their own species and would fight.

all those fish are too big for a 40g tank. you might be able to get away with ONE of those, or 2-3 angels, but definately not all of them together.

Everything that I've ever read advises against keeping Knifes and elephant noses together. Another thing is you should only keep one elephant nose or a group (3 or more) in the same tank. The clown loaches will get to big for a 40 gal. If you start with 4 angels you have a fair chance of getting a pair. If you did end up with a pair they would probably claim the entire tank, and terrorize everything else. I'm not sure about the dragon fish, but if it's a violet goby they are a brackish water species.

If it was my tank I would just make it a species tank for the knife.

I agree 100% of what has been said above. Simply put the tank will be way to small for all the above fish. There will be aggression issues between all the fish and this in itself will lead to death. On top of that the bioload would simply be to much even with extra filters.

ok so no clowns and i was just wondering about the eel so thats no biggie could i possibly have like 2-3 angels? and from past experience my gouramies never fight among them selves. and ive been doing research and many websites say elephants and knifes go together. So id rather have three elephants than clowns.

you could possibly go with the two or three angels, but i still wouldnt go with all four gouramis unless the tank is plante dvery well, there are loads of hiding spots, and all four are not male (you could have three females and one male, and if you do have lots of hiding spots you might be able to get away with two males), and females can be hard to find.
even in that size of tank, the three strongest may bullie the smallest until it dies, and then the two biggest will gang up on the next smallest one, and so on until there is only one left
since tai95 already told you that clown loaches get to big, why not try some smaller bottom feeders such as a school of 6 peppered corydoras? you might also want to have a small school of about six larger tetras such as black skirts, lemons, etc

and im cool with no gouramies im basicly looking for a tank with slow moving peacful fish

A 40gal is way to small for 3 elephant noses and a knife. If you did want to try this you would need at least a 6 foot (125gal +) tank to give them the space they need. I'm not sure what websites you have been looking at that said knifes and elephant noses would be a good combination, but I wouldn't trust them. Here are some links to sites that don't recommend it.

The only site I have seen that says it's ok to keep the two together is a site that sells fish. That site also says an elephant nose will be fine in a 29gal tank, So I would put to much faith in their information.

With only a 40gal tank you would be better off just having the knife.

ok thanks i dont want to do anything wrong for my fish. So any suggestion on what i could put with Ginzu??
