Good Beginner Fish?

What size tank are we talking about.....there are alot of good beginner fish (most mentioned above), but you can't put them all in a small tank. ;) Knowing your tanksize, we can better help you plan out your aquarium (if you want some help). :D

Tetras, danios, guppies, platies, cories, plecos (Bristlenose and Rubbernose are good beginner plecos for tanks 20g and up), loaches (yoyo, polka dot, kuhli, and zebra to name a few....all but kuhlis need atleast a 29g IMO...kuhlis are ok in a 20g), bolivian rams are ok for beginners.

Watch out for hatchetfish, they like to jump. Make sure your tank is well covered, or else you will find little dried up "quarters" with fins on your floor from time to time. Otherwise, they are a very active and fun fish to have.

Kuhli loaches make great bottom dwellers. Very peaceful, unique in shape, and they have lots of personality. The only thing is they like to hide a lot. If you get at least 3-6 though, they will be more active. Give them places to hide, like maybe placing some tiny clay pots on their side in the bottom of your tank. They will curl up in them and declare themselves hid, even though you can see them in there.

Tetras make great mid fish. I'm partial to neons. They are colorful and fairly cheap.

Otocinclus are also cute little fish, and they do a good job on algae. They also stay small, so you dont' have to worry about a big bioload from them.
i like the kuhli loahces but i dont believe my local fish provider has any

im getting a 29 or 55 gallon cant decide

Kuhlis can be hard to find. I managed to stumble across a local pet store that I didn't know existed, and they had some. Sometimes, you can ask stores to get them for you and they will, but big stores like Petsmart can't. Also, you can sometimes find online stores that will ship them to you, but I don't know how wise that is. It seems like it would be hard on the fish.

i wouldnt worry too much about top swimmers, mid swimmers, and bottom swimmers. most fish swim all over the tank! get the fish that you like the best (as long as they are combatable) and enjoy your new tank. the exception is the cories, they do stay at the bottom of your tank and are great fish.

No he shouldn't worry, but that doesn't mean he should totally ignore it. Because let's be honest, why buy a high tank like a 29 gallon (a tank he's thinking about) if he would buy nothing but 12 corys for example. Unless he's thinking about tall water plants it would be a waste of height at the cost of length.
