Good, cheap plant substrate?

Could you find some Flourite locally to save on shipping? You might be able to find Tahitian Moon Sand slightly cheaper - But not much.
lol i dont know about you but here the moon sand is $20 for 20 pounds just as costly as any plant substrate.
thats just sms that you use to be able to buy for $10-13 for 50 pounds
Interesting. I will definitely consider this.
i would look to see if you can find turface. i use sms solely in a few tanks. in some tanks i put a base of sms with eco on top. just remember with sms turface is its light in weight so a little more easy to get kicked up.

Moon Sand isn't a proper "plant" substrate though. It's just basically glass dust. If you like the sparkly look, it's wonderful. Though I have heard conflicting reports of whether it's bottom dweller safe.

The only proper "plant" substrates available right now in black are Flourite black sand and Eco Complete. But I would recommend finding the 3M ColorQuartz over both.

As long as plants can ro ot through it, I don't think it matters. If it is a nutrient deficient substrate like sand or regular aq. gravel, you can just supplement with root tabs.

There are also many that think proper water column fertilization is all you need in either case.

I used Seachem Fluorite because I got a good deal on it from a LFS who ordered a bunch in bulk and sold it to me by the pound.
